Fans of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) IPL franchise will no longer be greeted by songs and background music from Rajinikanth films, as the team recently told the Madras high court that it would desist from using music tracks from Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie. The submission was made in response to a copyright infringement plea filed by Sun TV Network. The plea sought to restrain CSK from using the songs and music owned by it, in the team’s promotional content uploaded on its official social media pages.
Sun TV sought an injunction and a direction to the team to pay Rs. 1 crore in damages for copyright infringement. Responding to the plea, CSK submitted that it had been using the music and that the petitioner did not oppose it earlier, but now that the objection had come, it would not use the songs going forward, without getting consent of the copyright owner or a Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL) licence.
Recording the submissions, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy adjourned the hearing to March 16 for CSK to file an affidavit.
