BENGALI FILMMAKER ANIK DUTTA DIES AFTER FALL FROM TERRACE | 28 May, 2026

Award-winning filmmaker Anik Dutta died yesterday (May 27) after falling from the terrace of his six-storey residential building at Hindustan Park in Calcutta. The police suspect it to be suicide.

The cops found a pair of leather sandals and a magazine, Cinematography Art, on the terrace. Tucked into the magazine was a hand-written one-page letter addressed to Anik’s Sweden-based daughter, stating that nobody was to blame for his death.

Anik Dutta had directed seven films and was deeply influenced by Satyajit Ray’s cinematic style. His Bhooter Bhabishyat was a big success. Dutta brought in a new genre of political satire in Bengali cinema.
