BANGALORE’S URVASHI CINEMA DOWNS SHUTTERS | 25 August, 2026

The iconic Urvashi cinema of Bangalore has closed down. Its demolition has started — not because of falling footfalls but following a legal dispute over the land lease.

The cinema was started in 1970 and had been inaugurated by Kannada film legend Dr. Rajkumar. The 1,150 seater has screened countless hits and blockbusters in its 56-year history. The advance booking of this week’s forthcoming film, Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown-Ups, was about to start when demolition work of the cinema commenced following the legal issue.
