INDRANI MUKERJEA GETS BAIL FROM SC AFTER ALMOST 7 YEARS IN JAIL | 19 May, 2022

Press personality Indrani Mukerjea, accused of murdering her own daughter, Sheena Bora, was on May 18 granted bail by the Supreme Court. A bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao, B.R. Gavai and A.S. Bopanna granted her bail plea, the seventh in as many years, made in January this year, on the grounds of her long incarceration and the fact that the trial was not going to be concluded soon. More than two-thirds of the witnesses are yet to be examined. The apex court bench also took into account that her ex-husband, Peter Mukerjea, a co-accused in the case, had been granted bail.

The Supreme Court said, Indrani should be released on the same terms and conditions imposed on Peter by the Bombay high court. Peter Mukerjea was given bail on a surety of Rs. 2 lakh.

Indrani, who was then married to press baron Peter Mukerjea, is the prime accused in the sensational murder case. Others accused in the case are Peter Mukerjea, Indrani’s former husband, Sanjeev Khanna, and driver, Shyamvar Rai. Indrani was arrested by the Bombay police on August 25, 2015.

Indrani will be set free from the Byculla (Bombay) jail only after a release plea is made before the trial court and formalities are completed.
