‘SOORYAVANSHI’ OPENS HUGE

Sooryavanshi opened huge this week. The first major release in 19 months was off to a fair start yesterday because of the confusion (in public minds) about whether it would or wouldn’t release in the national multiplex chains. But collections shot through the roof as the day progressed and as word about the film’s immense merits spread. Although the total for the day is still not known, it is definitely in the region of Rs. 27 crore, which is a mind-boggling figure, given that several states have still not permitted cinemas to function at full capacity, and there’s still the fear of COVID-19 in people’s minds.

Bekhudi proved to be a disaster in the first week.

Dilphire could not do anything worthwhile in 1st week.

Veer Gomtesha faced rejection in the first week.

Alipta (Marathi) did not win the audience’s appreciation in its first week.

Honsla Rakh (Punjabi) added Rs. 1.60 crore to its kitty in the third weekend. It netted Rs. 0.37 crore on Friday, Rs. 0.58 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 0.65 crore on Sunday. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 0.80 crore. Third week’s total: Rs. 2.40 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 19.75 crore.

DULL START OF ‘BHEDIYA’ DAMPENS SPIRITS RAISED BY LAST WEEK’S ‘DRISHYAM 2’

The shockingly poor initial of this week’s BHEDIYA has poured water on the euphoria created by the runaway success of last week’s DRISHYAM 2.

Drishyam 2 proves to be a super-hit. It soared high right from the word ‘go’ and was unstoppable all through the week, netting double-digit collections on each of the first five days of the first week. The film netted Rs. 15.38 crore on Friday, making it the second-highest opening of the year so far, next only to Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva. Collections jumped to Rs. 21.59 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 27.17 crore on Sunday, taking the first weekend’s total to an astounding Rs. 64.14 crore! Collections on the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 11.87 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 10.48 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 8.62 crore. The total for the weekdays, therefore, was a wonderful Rs. 40.52 crore! In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 104.66 crore. Its performance Overseas was very good. Mister Mummy proved to be a debacle in 1st week all over.

‘SHEHZADA’ FIRST WEEK COLLECTIONS SHOCK, ‘SELFIEE’ OPENING SHOCKS EVEN MORE!

The initial of SELFIEE yesterday (February 24) was extremely shocking. The Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi starrer opened to terribly poor houses (Rs. 2-plus crore only).

The film netted Rs. 5.75 crore on the first day. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 6.25 crore and Rs. 7.15 crore respectively. DABANGG 3, which was expected to make a big bang at the box-office, proved a dampener. This week’s GOOD NEWWZ has brought good cheer as the trade prepares to bid goodbye to the year and to welcome the new year.

Dabangg 3 has disappointed the public and, therefore, the trade. The tension in different parts of the country and extreme cold in North India did take their toll on the collections but even otherwise, collections were not upto the mark because of lack of appreciation. The film was dubbed in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu also. All the four versions together netted Rs. 24.50 crore on the first day, which was good but not great. Collections dropped on Saturday which closed at Rs. 23.75 crore. Although the fall was only Rs. 0.75 crore, the alarming point was that collections dropped instead of picking up by 20-30%. The net total for Sunday was Rs. 30.50 crore, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 78.75 crore. Collections on the weekdays were average, except on Wednesday which was a holiday (Christmas). It netted Rs. 10.25 crore on Monday, Rs. 10 crore on Tuesday, Rs. 16 crore on Wednesday, and Rs. 7 crore on Thursday. By netting Rs. 43.25 crore in the weekdays, it took its first week’s total to Rs. 122 crore. Having crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark on the sixth day, the film will now struggle to keep itself going on each passing day of the second week. It will be difficult for the Salman starrer to even reach the Rs. 150-crore mark as advance booking in the big cities is poor.

Star Wars: Vijaypath (dubbed) and the English original titled Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker could not score in 1st week. It collected Rs. 1.20 crore on the first day. Collections increased to Rs. 1.55 crore on Saturday, but reduced to Rs. 1.40 crore on Sunday. After a weekend total of Rs. 4.15 crore, collections on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.55 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.45 crore. By collecting a total of Rs. 2.40 crore in the weekdays, the film took its first week’s total to Rs. 6.55 crore.

Mardaani 2 held on very well in the second week. It netted Rs. 1.15 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections increased to Rs. 1.95 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 2.55 crore on Sunday. The second weekend, therefore, closed at a decent Rs. 5.65 crore. Collections got a boost on Christmas day but they were good even on the other weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.45 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.30 crore. In this way, the film added Rs. 6.50 crore to its kitty in the weekdays and hence took its second week’s total to Rs. 12.15 crore. The grand total for 2 weeks was Rs. 40.20 crore. In just 12 days, the film surpassed the total of Mardaani (Rs. 35.85 crore).

Jumanji: The Next Level (dubbed) and the English original of the same name did well in 2nd week also. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 1.20 crore. Saturday and Sunday collections showed jumps, with the days closing at Rs. 2.10 crore and Rs. 2.70 crore respectively. After a second weekend total of Rs. 6 crore, the collections during the weekdays were also good: Monday – Rs. 1.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.60 crore. By adding Rs. 7.75 crore in the weekdays, the film took its second week’s total to Rs. 13.75 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 49.32 crore.

Pati Patni Aur Woh was quite badly affected by the big release, Dabangg 3. It started its third weekend on a low note by netting Rs. 0.70 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday and Sunday increased to Rs. 1.20 crore and Rs. 1.50 crore respectively. Therefore, the film netted Rs. 3.40 crore in the third weekend. Collections in the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.95 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.03 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.80 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.78 crore. By netting Rs. 4.56 crore in the weekdays, the film took its total for the third week to Rs. 7.96 crore. Its grand total for 3 weeks was Rs. 82.21 crore.

‘THE KASHMIR FILES’ WRITES BOX-OFFICE HISTORY

The opening of Bachchhan Paandey yesterday (March 18) was not upto the mark because of Holi festivities and the strong opposition of The Kashmir Files which entered its second week. Bachchhan Paandey also did not get the shows and screens it would’ve otherwise got, because exhibitors clung on to The Kashmir Files for dear life. Of course, collections of Bachchhan Paandey grew as the day progressed because the Holi festivities were over by afternoon.

Radhe Shyam met with a disastrous fate in 1st week. Although the Telugu version of the bilingual performed better, it was still way below the mark. As for the Hindi version, its first week’s collections were terribly weak. The film’s Hindi version netted Rs. 4 crore on the first day. Collections picked up on Saturday and Sunday but the increase was unimpressive, considering that the start was so low. It collected Rs. 4.50 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 5 crore on Sunday, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 13.50 crore. Collections were rather poor on the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.15 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.65 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was a paltry Rs. 4.30 crore. The first week, therefore, closed at Rs. 17.80 crore. The distributor’s share from the Telugu version in the first week was only Rs. 52.59 crore. The Kannada dubbed version yielded a share of Rs. 4.18 crore, the Tamil version, Rs. 0.75 crore, and the Malayalam dubbed version, Rs. 0.18 crore. Including the Hindi version’s share of Rs. 8.90 crore, and the share of the various versions from the rest of India of Rs. 1.58 crore, the total all-India share in the first week was Rs. 68.18 crore. The film will entail heavy losses to all the distributors as they would reach the break-even point at a distributors’ share of Rs. 204 crore which seems to be a distant dream.

The Kashmir Files is nothing short of box-office magic! The film, made at a budget of only Rs. 15 crore, has surpassed all expectations and has written box-office history in the first week. Its second week’s opening is also historic, just like the first week’s collections. Looking to the outstanding public reports, the film was being screened in more than 2,600 screens by the end of the first week as against the less-than-700 screens on the first day!! The film netted Rs. 3.50 crore on day 1 from very limited screens. The screen count started increasing from the first day itself. Saturday collections shot up to Rs. 8.25 crore. The Sunday figure came as a virtual surprise to everyone. The third day closed at Rs. 15 crore, thereby taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 26.75 crore. What followed in the weekdays is probably unprecedented in box-office history. Collections on Monday were as huge as on Sunday — Rs. 15 crore. The film netted Rs. 18 crore on Tuesday, another first. The figure of Rs. 18.50 crore on Wednesday was also unprecedented. The film collected Rs. 18 crore on Thursday, taking the total for the weekdays to an unbelievable Rs. 69.50 crore, more than double the weekend’s total. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 96.25 crore! The film has become a movement of sorts through the length and breadth of the country. It has come like a saviour for exhibitors who had incurred huge losses during the lockdowns. Looking to the start of the second week, in spite of the new release (Bachchhan Paandey), it can safely be predicted that the film could end up collecting around Rs. 90-95 crore in the second week too! This will easily become the fastest Hindi grosser of all times, that too, with the highest ever Return on Investment (RoI)!!

ET – Etharkkum Thunindhavan (dubbed) fared miserably in the first week all over.

Jhund fared poorly in 2nd week which started with a take of only Rs. 0.55 crore. Collections for Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 0.95 crore and Rs. 1.10 crore respectively. Therefore, the total for the second weekend was Rs. 2.60 crore. Collections for the weekdays were rather pathetic: Monday – Rs. 0.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.35 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.35 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.30 crore. Hence the total for the weekdays was Rs. 1.40 crore, and for the second week, Rs. 4 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 12.95 crore.

The Batman (dubbed and original English versions) fell by more than 60% in its second week. It netted Rs. 1.65 crore on Friday. Collections more than doubled on Saturday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 3.40 crore. The total for Sunday (Rs. 3.25 crore) was less than that of Saturday. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 3.35 crore. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 11.65 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 42.10 crore.

Gangubai Kathiawadi started its third week with a take of Rs. 2.50 crore on the first day. Collections increased to Rs. 4.25 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 5 crore on Sunday. Therefore, the third weekend closed at Rs. 11.75 crore. Collections for the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.15 crore. Hence the total for the weekdays was Rs. 5.25 crore. In this way, the total for the third week was Rs. 17 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 119.35 crore.

Pawankhind (Marathi) continued its victory march in the fourth week too.

‘CIRKUS’ BOMBS, ‘AVATAR’ SEQUEL RULES

Cirkus has bombed miserably. Looking to the first week’s collections, it seems certain that the film, inspired by The Comedy Of Errors, will turn out to be a tragedy of errors in scripting. ‘BRAHMASTRA’ SHINES IN FIRST WEEKEND, DROPS THEREAFTER

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva did exceedingly well in the first weekend but collections dropped during the weekdays. Even amidst the negativity in the trade and among the public, the high-on-VFX film managed to cross the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and the Rs. 150-crore mark by the end of the first week. While the 2D version did not do too well after the weekend, the 3D version fared better wherever it was released alongside the 2D version. The Telugu dubbed version did phenomenally well in the first weekend, surpassing the lifetime collections of many dubbed versions of earlier Hindi films. Its performance Overseas has also been fantastic. The domestic collections of the Hindi version on the first day totalled Rs. 31 crore. Collections on Saturday jumped to Rs. 35 crore, and further to Rs. 38.50 crore on Sunday. In this way, the first weekend’s total was Rs. 104.50 crore. The dubbed versions netted Rs. 10 crore in the first weekend. So, all the versions together netted Rs. 114.50 crore. Collections of the Hindi version on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 14 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 11 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 7.75 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 42 crore. The first week’s total of only the Hindi version was, therefore, Rs. 146.50 crore. The dubbed versions collectively added Rs. 6.50 crore to its kitty during the weekdays, taking the first week’s total to Rs. 16.50 crore. In this way, the total of all the versions put together for the first week was Rs. 163 crore. It may be recalled that right in its review, Information had predicted a first weekend of Rs. 100 crore or thereabouts and a 10-day total of Rs. 200 crore or thereabouts. To quote from our review: “Business of the 3D version in the initial days will be far, far more than that of the 2D version. It has the potential to touch or almost touch the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and touch or almost touch the Rs. 200-crore mark by the end of the second weekend. For those who are concerned not just about box-office collections but also about cost-revenue economics, let it be said that for correct business analysis, part of the huge investment in the film is actually to be amortised by dividing it among three films — parts one, two and three.”
