GOOD NEWWZ has been the perfect ending to a fine year.

Good Newwz has done phenomenally well in the first week and should go super-strong in its second week too. It collected Rs. 17.56 crore on the first day. Collections increased by 25% on the second day which closed at Rs. 21.78 crore. There was a further jump of around 18% on Sunday (Rs. 25.65 crore). The weekend, therefore, closed at Rs. 64.99 crore. Collections during the weekdays were also extraordinary due to excellent word of mouth and the New Year’s eve and New Year celebratory mood. It collected Rs. 13.41 crore on Monday, Rs. 16.20 crore on Tuesday (31st December), Rs. 22.50 crore on Wednesday (New Year’s day), and Rs. 10.80 crore on Thursday. In this way, the film netted Rs. 62.91 crore in the weekdays, almost as much as in the weekend. The first week, therefore, closed at an exceptional Rs. 127.90 crore. The film joined the Rs. 100-crore club on the sixth day itself. Its performance at the Overseas box-office was also lovely. It grossed Rs. 25 crore in the first weekend and another Rs. 20.60 crore in the weekdays, taking the first week’s Overseas total to Rs. 45.60 crore. It may become Akshay’s highest grosser abroad as it has already surpassed his earlier hits in North America and Australia.

Dabangg 3 dropped by almost 85% in 2nd week despite the New Year celebratory mood. The second weekend started on a slow note with a net collection of Rs. 3 crore on Friday. The collections for Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 3.50 crore and Rs. 4 crore respectively. After a second weekend total of Rs. 10.50 crore, collections during the weekdays were as follows: Rs. 2 crore on Monday, Rs. 2.50 crore on Tuesday (New Year’s eve), Rs. 4.10 crore on Wednesday (New Year’s day), and Rs. 1.60 crore on Thursday. The total for the weekdays, therefore, was Rs. 10.20 crore. In this way, the second week’s total was Rs. 20.70 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 142.70 crore.

Star Wars: Vijaypath (dubbed) and the English original, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, fared poorly in 2nd week.

Mardaani 2 did fair business in 3rd week. It netted Rs. 2.70 crore in the third weekend, and another Rs. 2.35 crore in the weekdays. By adding Rs. 5.05 crore to its kitty in 3rd week, it took its grand total for 3 weeks to Rs. 45.25 crore. The lifetime collections of Rani Mukerji’s Hichki, her last film before Mardaani 2, were Rs. 46.18 crore. So, Mardaani 2 is all set to surpass that.

Jumanji: The Next Level (dubbed) and the English original of the same name collected Rs. 4.10 crore in the third weekend, and another Rs. 4.20 crore in the weekdays. By adding Rs. 8.30 crore to its kitty in the third week, it took its total for 3 weeks to Rs. 57.62 crore.

LATEST POSITION | 28 December, 2019

DABANGG 3, which was expected to make a big bang at the box-office, proved a dampener. This week’s GOOD NEWWZ has brought good cheer as the trade prepares to bid goodbye to the year and to welcome the new year.

Dabangg 3 has disappointed the public and, therefore, the trade. The tension in different parts of the country and extreme cold in North India did take their toll on the collections but even otherwise, collections were not upto the mark because of lack of appreciation. The film was dubbed in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu also. All the four versions together netted Rs. 24.50 crore on the first day, which was good but not great. Collections dropped on Saturday which closed at Rs. 23.75 crore. Although the fall was only Rs. 0.75 crore, the alarming point was that collections dropped instead of picking up by 20-30%. The net total for Sunday was Rs. 30.50 crore, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 78.75 crore. Collections on the weekdays were average, except on Wednesday which was a holiday (Christmas). It netted Rs. 10.25 crore on Monday, Rs. 10 crore on Tuesday, Rs. 16 crore on Wednesday, and Rs. 7 crore on Thursday. By netting Rs. 43.25 crore in the weekdays, it took its first week’s total to Rs. 122 crore. Having crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark on the sixth day, the film will now struggle to keep itself going on each passing day of the second week. It will be difficult for the Salman starrer to even reach the Rs. 150-crore mark as advance booking in the big cities is poor.

Star Wars: Vijaypath (dubbed) and the English original titled Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker could not score in 1st week. It collected Rs. 1.20 crore on the first day. Collections increased to Rs. 1.55 crore on Saturday, but reduced to Rs. 1.40 crore on Sunday. After a weekend total of Rs. 4.15 crore, collections on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.55 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.45 crore. By collecting a total of Rs. 2.40 crore in the weekdays, the film took its first week’s total to Rs. 6.55 crore.

Mardaani 2 held on very well in the second week. It netted Rs. 1.15 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections increased to Rs. 1.95 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 2.55 crore on Sunday. The second weekend, therefore, closed at a decent Rs. 5.65 crore. Collections got a boost on Christmas day but they were good even on the other weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.45 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.30 crore. In this way, the film added Rs. 6.50 crore to its kitty in the weekdays and hence took its second week’s total to Rs. 12.15 crore. The grand total for 2 weeks was Rs. 40.20 crore. In just 12 days, the film surpassed the total of Mardaani (Rs. 35.85 crore).

Jumanji: The Next Level (dubbed) and the English original of the same name did well in 2nd week also. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 1.20 crore. Saturday and Sunday collections showed jumps, with the days closing at Rs. 2.10 crore and Rs. 2.70 crore respectively. After a second weekend total of Rs. 6 crore, the collections during the weekdays were also good: Monday – Rs. 1.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.60 crore. By adding Rs. 7.75 crore in the weekdays, the film took its second week’s total to Rs. 13.75 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 49.32 crore.

Pati Patni Aur Woh was quite badly affected by the big release, Dabangg 3. It started its third weekend on a low note by netting Rs. 0.70 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday and Sunday increased to Rs. 1.20 crore and Rs. 1.50 crore respectively. Therefore, the film netted Rs. 3.40 crore in the third weekend. Collections in the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.95 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.03 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.80 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.78 crore. By netting Rs. 4.56 crore in the weekdays, the film took its total for the third week to Rs. 7.96 crore. Its grand total for 3 weeks was Rs. 82.21 crore.

LATEST POSITION | 21 December, 2019

The opening of this week’s DABANGG 3 is definitely not exciting news. No doubt, the tense atmosphere in some parts of the country due to agitations over CAB and NRC, and extreme cold in North India have affected collections adversely, but the initial otherwise, too, was not exceptional as is the norm for Salman starrers.

Mardaani 2 has done very well in the first week, surpassing the first week’s collections of the first part (Mardaani) in just 5 days. It netted Rs. 3.80 crore on the first day, which was a decent opening, considering that it stars only Rani Mukerji (and has no hero) and has the Mardaani brand to boast of. Collections jumped up by 75% on the second day which closed at Rs. 6.55 crore. Collections on Sunday were even better at Rs. 7.80 crore. Therefore, the first weekend’s total was more than four-and-a-half times the first day’s collections. After a weekend of Rs. 18.15 crore, collections on the weekdays were also good: Monday – Rs. 2.85 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.65 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 2.15 crore. By adding Rs. 9.90 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, the film took its total for the first week to Rs. 28.05 crore. Mardaani had netted Rs. 22.97 crore in the first week whereas Rani’s Hichki had collected Rs. 26.10 crore in the first seven days. Mardaani 2 has been made at a cost of Rs. 20 crore, and an additional sum of Rs. 7 crore has been spent on its promotion and release. Of the investment of Rs. 27 crore, the producers had already recovered Rs. 25 crore from sale of satellite and digital rights, leaving only Rs. 2 crore to be recovered from India and Overseas theatrical revenues to break even. The first week’s share from India alone is Rs. 14 crore, making the film a semi-hit. Abroad, the film has grossed Rs. 8.5 crore in the first week.

The Body met with a disastrous fate. It started slow and almost sank into oblivion as the week progressed. It collected only Rs. 0.60 crore on the first day. Collection on Saturday was Rs. 0.85 crore but the figure for Sunday (Rs. 0.80 crore) was less than that, underlining the fact that the film had been rejected. After a first weekend of Rs. 2.25 crore, collections on the weekdays were very poor: Monday – Rs. 0.28 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.26 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.26 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.25 crore. By adding just Rs. 1.05 crore to the kitty in the weekdays, the film took its first week’s total to Rs. 3.30 crore.

Phati Padi Hai Yaar! bombed miserably in the first week.

Jumanji: The Next Level (dubbed) and the English original of the same name did well in 1st week. After collecting Rs. 1.15 crore in paid previews on Thursday (not Rs. 1.25 crore as mentioned last week), it netted Rs. 5.05 crore on Friday. Collections increased more than 60% on Saturday so that the day closed at Rs. 8.35 crore. The total on Sunday at Rs. 10.10 crore was 20% more than on Saturday. Therefore, the film netted Rs. 24.65 crore in the first weekend (including paid previews). Collections during the weekdays were nice: Monday – Rs. 3.01 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.80 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.60 crore, Thursday – Rs. 2.51 crore. By netting Rs. 10.92 crore in the weekdays, the film took its total for the first week to Rs. 35.57 crore.

Panipat fared poorly in 2nd week. It collected Rs. 0.65 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections increased to Rs. 1.25 crore on Saturday, and to Rs. 1.55 crore on Sunday so that the second weekend’s total went up to Rs. 3.45 crore. Collections on the weekdays were dull: Monday – Rs. 0.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.50 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.80 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.05 crore. In this way, the film added Rs. 2.75 crore to its kitty in the weekdays and took its total for 2nd week to Rs. 6.20 crore. Total for 2 weeks: Rs. 31.95 crore. Its gross total Overseas for the first two weeks was only Rs. 8.44 crore.

Pati Patni Aur Woh continued to score in 2nd week. It netted Rs. 3.05 crore on Friday, Rs. 4.88 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 5.52 crore on Sunday. By netting Rs. 7.31 crore in the weekdays, the film took its second week’s total to Rs. 20.76 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 74.25 crore.

Jumanji: The Next Level (dubbed) and the English original of the same name opened in paid previews on Thursday (12th December) and fared well by netting Rs. 1.15 crore on the first day in limited shows.

Panipat has fared miserably in the first week in spite of good reviews by the majority of the reviewers. As predicted, the big-budget period drama found few takers as compared to the investment made in the Arjun Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt starrer. It started slow and although collections picked up during the weekend, the increase in collections was limited because of the poor reports of the film. Collections dropped markedly after the weekend — and this despite the fact that the weekend collections themselves were on the lower side. The film started off with a net total of Rs. 4.15 crore. On Saturday, the total was Rs. 5.75 crore. Collections increased further to Rs. 7.85 crore, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 17.75 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2.60 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.25 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.70 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.45 crore. In this way, the film netted Rs. 8 crore in the weekdays. The total for the first week, therefore, was an unimpressive Rs. 25.75 crore only. The film is likely to entail a loss of Rs. 35-crore-plus to the producers/distributors. Its performance abroad was also dismal.

Pati Patni Aur Woh did exceedingly well in the first week all over. It recorded the best opening for Kartik Aaryan so far, by netting Rs. 9.10 crore on the first day. Collections jumped up by 40% on Saturday which closed at Rs. 12.33 crore. The figure for Sunday was even more — Rs. 14.51 crore. In this way, the comedy film collected a total of Rs. 35.94 crore in the first weekend. Collections for the weekdays were also pretty impressive: Monday – Rs. 5.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 4.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 3.65 crore. By netting Rs. 17.55 crore in the weekdays, the film took its first week’s total to Rs. 53.49 crore.

Pahala Pahala Pyar fared miserably in the first week and proved to be a damp squib.

Commando 3 dropped dramatically in 2nd week because of the two major releases. It collected only Rs. 1.70 crore in the second weekend, and an additional Rs. 1.14 crore in the weekdays. By adding Rs. 2.84 crore to its kitty in the second week, it took its grand total for 2 weeks to Rs. 32.06 crore.

Hotel Mumbai (dubbed) and the English version of the same name could collect only Rs. 1.10 crore in the second weekend, and Rs. 0.58 crore in the weekdays. It, therefore, netted Rs. 1.68 crore in 2nd week, taking its total for 2 weeks to Rs. 8.89 crore.

Frozen II (animation, dubbed) and the English original of the same name collected Rs. 0.60 crore on the first day of the third weekend. Collections almost trebled on Saturday (Rs. 1.70 crore) and shot up even more on Sunday (Rs. 2.10 crore). Hence, the film amassed Rs. 4.40 crore in the third weekend. It added Rs. 1.35 crore to its kitty in the weekdays. In this way, its total for 3rd week was Rs. 5.75 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 43.60 crore.

Commando 3 did reasonably well in the first week. As around 80-90% of the investment in the film had already been recovered from non-theatrical sources, it has proven to be a paying proposal for all concerned. Ujda Chaman could not make a mark in the first week. It started slow and hardly picked up in the weekend. Collections during the week days were, of course, dull. The film netted Rs. 1.75 crore on the first day. The total for Saturday was Rs. 2.50 crore. The increase on Sunday was not much as the day closed at only Rs. 2.75 crore. After a first weekend total of Rs. 7 crore, the collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.80 crore, Wednesday – 0.70 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.60 crore. In other words, the total for the weekdays was only Rs. 3 crore. Thus, the first week closed at a very ordinary Rs. 10 crore.

Terminator: Dark Fate (dubbed) and the English original of the same name recorded average collections in the first week. It started the first weekend with a total of Rs. 2.85 crore. Collections on Saturday (Rs. 3.25 crore) and Sunday (Rs. 3.50 crore) were not very impressive. The first weekend’s total of Rs. 9.60 crore was also so-so. Collections during the weekdays were as follows. Monday Rs. 1.20 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.05 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.85 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.80 crore. It, therefore, netted Rs. 3.90 crore in the weekdays and thereby took its total for the first week to Rs. 13.50 crore.

Housefull 4 maintained very well in the second weekend. Collections during the weekdays were quite good. Overall, the film’s performance in week 2 was good. The second weekend started with Rs. 8.05 crore on the first day. Collections increased to Rs. 10.10 crore on Saturday. The Sunday total was an excellent Rs. 13.12 crore. In this way, the film netted Rs. 31.27 crore in the second weekend. Collections on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 5.45 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 4.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3.80 crore, Thursday – Rs. 3.15 crore. Saand Ki Aankh was steady at medium collections in 2nd week. The second weekend began with a take of Rs. 1.28 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday totalled Rs. 1.89 crore while the total for Sunday was Rs. 2.32 crore. The second weekend, therefore, closed at Rs. 5.49 crore. Housefull 4 may have started slow because of the pre-Diwali dullness at the box-office in general but collections shot up phenomenally on Monday (New Year’s day), after which it maintained fabulously well. The Diwali advantage was, quite understandably, more pronounced in Gujarat, U.P., Rajasthan, Bihar, C.P. Berar and C.I. The film opened with a net collection total of Rs. 16.50 crore. Collections picked up only marginally on Saturday which closed at Rs. 17 crore. There was actually a drop in collections on Sunday (Rs. 14 crore) due to Laxmi pooja and other festivities in Hindu households. In this way, the first weekend’s total was Rs. 47.50 crore. The jump in collections on Monday was extraordinary as the film collected Rs. 33.50 crore which was more than double the Friday figure. Collections on the other weekdays were: Tuesday – Rs. 24 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 16.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 13 crore. With a total of Rs. 86.75 crore during the weekdays, the first week’s total was an outstanding Rs. 134.25 crore.

Made In China started very slow, picked up on Monday but not much, and then went back to the below-average level after the festive days. It started with a net total of Rs. 0.90 crore on the first day. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 1.25 crore and Rs. 0.90 crore respectively. It, therefore, netted Rs. 3.05 crore in the first weekend. The dull total was due not only to the dull pre-Diwali period but also because of the poor reports of the film. Collections increased on Monday (Rs. 2.50 crore) and Tuesday (Rs. 1.55 crore) but came down on Wednesday (Rs. 1 crore). Collection on Thursday was Rs. 0.90 crore. Thus, by adding Rs. 5.95 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, the film took its total for the first week to Rs. 9 crore. Although made at a modest budget, the film has turned out to be a disappointment — both, in artistic as well as commercial terms.

Saand Ki Aankh showed a marked growth on New Year’s day, and the positive reports helped the film sustain all through the weekdays. Yet, the film managed an ordinary total for the first week because the first weekend’s total was poor and also because the increase in collections was not phenomenal in absolute terms. Housefull 4 proved a formidable opposition to the film. Saand Ki Aankh netted Rs. 0.48 crore on Friday. Collections more than doubled on Saturday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 1.08 crore. The figure for Sunday was Rs. 0.91 crore. After a weekend total of just Rs. 2.47 crore, collections on Monday and Tuesday were superb, relatively speaking. It collected Rs. 3.19 crore on Monday, and Rs. 2.85 crore on Tuesday. While Wednesday closed at Rs. 1.63 crore, Thursday ended at Rs. 1.54 crore. In other words, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 9.21 crore. The first week’s total, therefore, was Rs. 11.68 crore — very impressive, considering that the first day’s total was only Rs. 0.50 crore, but not too exciting because the figure per se is ordinary.

Laal Kaptaan crashed in the second week — that is, in the very few cinemas where it did run in 2nd week.

Ghost also fared poorly in the second week — of course, in the cinemas where it found playing time!

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil (dubbed) and its English original of the same name did below-average business in the second week.

The Sky Is Pink recorded poor collections in 3rd week in the few shows it managed to get.

War collected Rs. 1.80 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 3.52 crore in the weekdays. In other words, its total for 4th week was Rs. 5.32 crore (Rs. 5.14 crore for the Hindi version; Rs. 0.18 crore for the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions). Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 314.67 crore. Breakup: Hindi version – Rs. 300.14 crore, dubbed versions – Rs. 14.53 crore.
