‘DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’ (DUBBED) REVIEW | 26 July, 2024

Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort and 21 Laps Entertainment’s Deadpool & Wolverine (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; A) is a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).

Six years after Wade Wilson’s (Ryan Reynolds) request to join the Avengers is turned down, he has retired from being the masked mercenary known as Deadpool. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) captures Wade and delivers him to Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) who offers him to join Earth-616. Paradox also reveals that Wade’s timeline is deteriorating due to the death of James ‘Logan’ Howlett (Hugh Jackman), who is revealed to be the timeline’s “anchor being”. Wade steals Paradox’s TemPad to travel back to where he had massacred many TVA agents using Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton. He then travels the multiverse and finds a variant of Logan to save his timeline.

Wade takes one Logan variant to the TVA where he learns that this particular Logan had destroyed his own universe before Paradox prunes them both into the Void. They are sent to Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) who demonstrates her unbridled power. She kills Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) who has accompanied Wade and Logan. The two then meet the resistance members against Nova, who want to team up with Wade and Logan to fight Nova. Circumstances force Nova to allow Wade and Logan to travel to Wade’s timeline. What happens thereafter?

Based on Marvel Comics’ characters, Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells and Shawn Levy have written an entertaining story, full of fun, frolic and action. Their screenplay concentrates on the entertainment quotient right from the word ‘go’. The drama is replete with humour, often vulgar and obscene too, but which entertains the audience full throttle. There is a dash of emotions, too, and it has been blended very well with the rest of the drama. Film industry jokes are aplenty, which would be enjoyed by the classes but not by the masses. The scene in the climax, in which Wolverine saves Deadpool, will bring the house down with applause. Mayur Puri’s dialogues are extremely mass-appealing.

Ryan Reynolds does an outstanding job as Wade Wilson/Deadpool. He is very endearing too. Hugh Jackman is simply splendid in the role of James ‘Logan’ Howlett or Wolverine. He plays to the gallery and will be loved by the audience. Emma Corrin is first-rate as Cassandra Nova. Matthew Macfadyen leaves a fine impression as Mr. Paradox. Morena Baccarin makes her presence felt as Wade Wilson’s former fiancée, Vanessa Carlysle. Rob Delaney is nice as Peter Wisdom. Leslie Uggams makes her mark as Wade Wilson’s blind elderly roommate. Aaron Stanford has his moments as Pyro. Dafne Keen (as Laura/X-23), Jennifer Garner (as Elektra Natchios), Tyler Mane (as Sabretooth), Chris Evans (as Johnny Storm/Human Torch), Wesley Snipes (as Eric Brooks/Blade), dog Peggy (as Dogpool), Blake Lively (as Lady Deadpool), Matthew McConaughey (as Cowboy Deadpool), Nathan Fillion (as Headpool), Wunmi Mosaku (as Hunter B-15), Jon Favreau (as Happy Hogan), Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Channing Tatum (as Remy LeBeau/Gambit), and the others lend tremendous support.

Shawn Levy’s direction caters to the masses as well as the classes. His narration doesn’t give the viewers even a minute to think. Rob Simonsen’s background music is terrific. George Richmond does a swell job of the cinematography. Ray Chan’s production designing is of a fantastic standard. Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid’s editing is super-crisp. Dubbing is excellent.

On the whole, Deadpool & Wolverine is a hit fare as it entertains excellently. Besides, the brand value will also contribute to the initial business. Its original English version will also fare tremendously well, probably better than the dubbed Hindi version.
