HOW BAD NEWS BECAME GOOD NEWS… AND ‘GOOD NEWWZ 2’ BECAME ‘BAD NEWZ’ | 7 April, 2024

Know how Karan Johar and Amritpal Singh Bindra’s film came to be titled Bad Newz? There’s a funny story behind the title of the Vicky Kaushal, Tripti Dimri and Ammy Virk starrer, directed by Anand Tiwari. Frankly, the producers wanted to title the film Good Newwz 2 but since Good Newwz was jointly produced by Karan and Akshay Kumar, making the second film in the series would require the producer (in this case, Karan Johar) making the second part to obtain the consent of the other producer too (in this case, Akshay Kumar). So off went Amritpal Singh Bindra, the co-producer of Good Newwz 2, to Akshay Kumar, assuming that it was just a formality as, after all, what objection could Akshay have over the title?

But Bindra couldn’t have been more wrong! Akshay refused to give his consent to the title. A crestfallen Bindra was in tears when he telephoned Karan Johar to inform that the hero of Good Newwz had not given his consent to the title Good Newwz 2. The worst part was that the film was complete by then. The producers had mentally decided that the most apt title for the film would be Good Newwz 2. When Amritpal Singh Bindra told Karan in his telephonic conversation that he had some bad news to share with him and then went on to narrate how Akshay had refused to give him the no objection certificate, Karan first pacified him. And then equally quickly, Johar hastened to add that he had found a new title for their complete film. “Bad news, did you say?”, asked Karan excitedly, and without waiting for Bindra to reply, continued, “Listen, that’s the title of our film. Yes, Bad Newz it is!” As Johar explained, “The good news in the film is, in a manner of speaking, also a kind of bad news. Hence the title Bad Newz fitted perfectly well.”

And that’s how Good Newwz 2 became Bad Newz.
