‘MRS.’ REVIEW | 7 February, 2025

Jio Studios and Baweja Studios’ Mrs. (UA) is the story of an ambitious young lady trying to adjust in her matrimonial home.

Richa (Sanya Malhotra) is a trained dancer and is part of a dance group. She marries Diwakar Kumar (Nishant Dahiya), son of Ashwin Kumar (Kanwaljit Singh) and Meena Kumar (Aparna Ghoshal). Richa tries hard to adjust to the new environment and gives it her best shot but her husband and in-laws never seem to be happy with her. The family members always find something lacking in her work output, which frustrates Richa no end. What happens finally? Does Richa win her family members over? Or does the tension between her and her husband and in-laws only keep increasing?

The film is based on the novel The Great Indian Kitchen by Jeo Baby. The story, written by Anu Singh Choudhary, Harman Baweja and Arati Kadav, is quite routine. The trio’s screenplay becomes repetitive after a point of time. Showing Richa’s mother-in-law and Richa repeatedly doing the household chores day in and day out gets so monotonous that it starts irritating the viewers. The climax might satisfy the classes, but the large mass base among the audience will not approve of the same. Anu Singh Choudhary’s dialogues are okay; they should’ve been better.

Sanya Malhotra is very natural as Richa. She acts with effortless ease. Nishant Dahiya is alright as Diwakar Kumar. Kanwaljit Singh is okay as Diwakar’s father, Ashwin Kumar. Aparna Ghoshal is so-so as Diwakar’s mother, Meena Kumar. Mrinal Kulkarni lends fair support as Richa’s mother. Girish Dhamija is ordinary as Richa’s father. Harshika Kewalramani leaves an ordinary mark as Richa’s friend, Bubbles. Varun Badola is quite impactful as Tunnu bhaiya. Nitya Moyal (as Saavi), Gulista (as Saavi’s mother), Siya Mahajan (as Diwakar’s sister), Raunak Chandel (as Diwakar’s brother-in-law), Nilofer Ghesawat (as Tunnu bhaiya‘s wife, Binny bhabhi), Lavleen Misra (as Diwakar’s bua), Suraj Kakkar (as Bubbles’ husband), Ravi Jha (as Fufaji), and Bhavya Gurnani (as Tunnu bhaiya‘s son, Guddu) provide routine support. Others pass muster.

Arati Kadav’s direction is ordinary. Sagar Desai and Faizan Hussain’s music is average. Lyrics (by Neeraj Pandey and Arun Kumar) are okay. Brinda Parameswar’s choreography is just about fair except for Sanya Malhotra’s wonderful dance in the beginning. Sagar Desai’s background music is nothing to shout about. Pratham Mehta’s camerawork is fair. Nida Khalid Shaikh’s production designing is routine. Prerna Saigal’s editing ought to have been crisper.

On the whole, Mrs. is a dull fare.
