Queen 2 has run into legal trouble with production house Phantom filing a Rs. 250 crore lawsuit against JioStar in the Bombay high court, alleging that the upcoming film was an “unauthorised sequel” and infringed upon the intellectual property (IP) rights of Queen (2014). The 2014 film was produced jointly by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Phantom Films.
JioStar India Pvt. Ltd. informed the court today (July 12) that the upcoming film (Queen 2) is an original stand-alone project with an independent story, and not a sequel to Queen. The statement issued by JioStar says that Queen 2 has no narrative, character or creative connection to any prior work. It adds that since the word ‘Queen’ is a common noun, no party can claim exclusive ownership over it.
Like Queen, Queen 2 also stars Kangana Ranaut, and is directed by Vikas Bahl who was also the director of Queen. The film was shot earlier this year.
