A deepfake video of actress Rashmika Mandana has created a furore with industry people like Amitabh Bachchan (her co-star from Goodbye) calling for swift legal action against the wrong doers. The video shows a woman in an elevator with her face edited (using Artificial Intelligence) to resemble Rashmika Mandana’s.
Most of the celebrities have photographs and videos of themselves posted on social media. Sometimes the video in which they are tagged may include a good sampling of their voices. Through Artificial Intelligence ML/DL (Machine Learning/Deep Learning), those posts can be used to build a simulation of the likeness of the celebrities and/or voice to trick someone into believing that they’ve done or said something which they never did.
Worried about the challenges which deepfakes pose, the Union Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) recently asked social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, to take down misleading content generated through Artificial Intelligence — deepfakes — within 24 hours.
