Thappad started slow but collections jumped in the weekend and were steady at medium levels during the weekdays. Of course, the film has been appreciated by one section of the audience while being rejected by the masses and viewers in smaller centres. It netted Rs. 2.85 crore on the first day but positive word of mouth from a section of the audience saw collections increasing to Rs. 4.65 crore on Saturday. The jump on Sunday was even more pronounced as the day closed at Rs. 6.50 crore. The film, which was made at an investment of Rs. 19 crore, recovered around Rs. 34 crore from sale of digital and satellite rights only. Besides the profit of Rs. 15 crore prior to release, the entire theatrical share (Rs. 10.50 crore in the first week) would go towards further profit.

‘O’ Pushpa I Hate Tears fared so poorly in the first week that the collections could only induce the much-hated tears from the eyes of those connected with it.

Guns Of Banaras faced rejection in the 1st week all over.

Collections increased to Rs. 2.85 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 3.50 crore on Sunday, taking the second weekend’s total to Rs. 8.20 crore. Collections in the weekdays were very low: Monday – Rs. 1.05 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.85 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.80 crore. LATEST POSITION | 1 November, 2019

Housefull 4 may have started slow because of the pre-Diwali dullness at the box-office in general but collections shot up phenomenally on Monday (New Year’s day), after which it maintained fabulously well. The Diwali advantage was, quite understandably, more pronounced in Gujarat, U.P., Rajasthan, Bihar, C.P. Berar and C.I. The film opened with a net collection total of Rs. 16.50 crore. Collections picked up only marginally on Saturday which closed at Rs. 17 crore. There was actually a drop in collections on Sunday (Rs. 14 crore) due to Laxmi pooja and other festivities in Hindu households. In this way, the first weekend’s total was Rs. 47.50 crore. The jump in collections on Monday was extraordinary as the film collected Rs. 33.50 crore which was more than double the Friday figure. Collections on the other weekdays were: Tuesday – Rs. 24 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 16.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 13 crore. With a total of Rs. 86.75 crore during the weekdays, the first week’s total was an outstanding Rs. 134.25 crore.

Made In China started very slow, picked up on Monday but not much, and then went back to the below-average level after the festive days. It started with a net total of Rs. 0.90 crore on the first day. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 1.25 crore and Rs. 0.90 crore respectively. It, therefore, netted Rs. 3.05 crore in the first weekend. The dull total was due not only to the dull pre-Diwali period but also because of the poor reports of the film. Collections increased on Monday (Rs. 2.50 crore) and Tuesday (Rs. 1.55 crore) but came down on Wednesday (Rs. 1 crore). Collection on Thursday was Rs. 0.90 crore. Thus, by adding Rs. 5.95 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, the film took its total for the first week to Rs. 9 crore. Although made at a modest budget, the film has turned out to be a disappointment — both, in artistic as well as commercial terms.

Saand Ki Aankh showed a marked growth on New Year’s day, and the positive reports helped the film sustain all through the weekdays. Yet, the film managed an ordinary total for the first week because the first weekend’s total was poor and also because the increase in collections was not phenomenal in absolute terms. Housefull 4 proved a formidable opposition to the film. Saand Ki Aankh netted Rs. 0.48 crore on Friday. Collections more than doubled on Saturday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 1.08 crore. The figure for Sunday was Rs. 0.91 crore. After a weekend total of just Rs. 2.47 crore, collections on Monday and Tuesday were superb, relatively speaking. It collected Rs. 3.19 crore on Monday, and Rs. 2.85 crore on Tuesday. While Wednesday closed at Rs. 1.63 crore, Thursday ended at Rs. 1.54 crore. In other words, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 9.21 crore. The first week’s total, therefore, was Rs. 11.68 crore — very impressive, considering that the first day’s total was only Rs. 0.50 crore, but not too exciting because the figure per se is ordinary.

Laal Kaptaan crashed in the second week — that is, in the very few cinemas where it did run in 2nd week.

Ghost also fared poorly in the second week — of course, in the cinemas where it found playing time!

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil (dubbed) and its English original of the same name did below-average business in the second week.

The Sky Is Pink recorded poor collections in 3rd week in the few shows it managed to get.

War collected Rs. 1.80 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 3.52 crore in the weekdays. In other words, its total for 4th week was Rs. 5.32 crore (Rs. 5.14 crore for the Hindi version; Rs. 0.18 crore for the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions). Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 314.67 crore. Breakup: Hindi version – Rs. 300.14 crore, dubbed versions – Rs. 14.53 crore.

Love Aaj Kal 2020 flopped in the first week itself. It started well because of its release on Valentine’s Day. The first day’s net collection of Rs. 12 crore gave way to a Saturday total of only Rs. 7 crore. The second day’s total was conclusive proof that the film had been rejected by the public. As if that weren’t bad enough, collections on Sunday were as dull as Saturday. After netting Rs. 7 crore on Sunday, the Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan starrer took its first weekend’s total to Rs. 26 crore. Collections on the weekdays were rather pathetic: Monday – Rs. 2 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.35 crore. In this way, the film netted Rs. 6.60 crore in the weekdays and took its total for the first week to Rs. 32.60 crore. The film, which had to net Rs. 100 crore to break even, will lose breath at less than Rs. 40 crore!

Malang did fair in 2nd week but is still a far cry from its break-even point of Rs. 70-crore-plus. It started its second weekend by collecting Rs. 2.25 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday (Rs. 2.50 crore) and Sunday (Rs. 3.15 crore) took the second weekend’s total to Rs. 7.90 crore. Collections during the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.25 crore. By netting Rs. 5.20 crore in the weekdays, the film took its total for 2nd week to Rs. 13.10 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 50.20 crore.

Jawaani Jaaneman netted Rs. 0.90 crore in its third weekend, and another Rs. 0.60 crore in the weekdays. By adding Rs. 1.50 crore to its kitty in 3rd week, the film took its 3-week total to Rs. 25.25 crore.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior started its sixth weekend by collecting Rs. 0.65 crore on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 1 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 1.50 crore on Sunday. It, therefore, netted Rs. 3.15 crore in the sixth weekend. Collections during the weekdays were decent: Monday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.65 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.55 crore. So, it added Rs. 2.10 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, taking its total for 6th week to Rs. 5.25 crore. Grand total for 6 weeks: Rs. 258.45 crore.

Malang did average business in the first week. It opened to average houses on the first day which closed at Rs. 6.25 crore. There was a jump of more than 30% on Saturday which closed at Rs. 8.25 crore. However, the increase on Sunday was below the mark because the word of mouth was not upto the mark. Sunday closed at only Rs. 9.25 crore, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 23.75 crore. Collections during the weekdays were fair but not good enough for the investment of Rs. 65 crore in the film. Monday closed at Rs. 3.85 crore, Tuesday at Rs.3.55 crore, Wednesday at Rs. 3.10 crore, and Thursday at Rs. 2.85 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 13.35 crore, and the total for the first week, Rs. 37.10 crore. The film needs to net around Rs. 70-75 crore to break even.

Shikara did ordinary in the first weekend, after which collections dropped fast and furiously. It collected Rs. 1.20 crore on the first day, Rs. 1.65 crore on Saturday and Rs. 1.70 crore on Sunday. The negligible increase in collections on Sunday gave an indication that the film was not headed for anything substantive at the turnstiles. Sure enough, after a weekend total of Rs. 4.55 crore, collections during the weekdays were below the mark: Monday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.35 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.35 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.35 crore. By adding Rs. 1.50 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, the film took its first week’s total to Rs. 6.05 crore. Although it is a moderately priced film, it will not be able to show any profit because of the dull collections in the weekdays. The film came in for criticism as it is said to be a very lame recounting of events that happened when Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee Kashmir in 1990, leaving their homes, wealth and assets behind.

Hacked fared poorly in the first week. The poorly-promoted film collected only Rs. 0.20 crore on the first day. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 0.26 crore and 0.32 crore respectively. After a first weekend total of only Rs. 0.78 crore, collections on the weekdays were even more pathetic – Rs. 0.12 crore on each of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. By adding Rs. 1.20 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, the film took its total for 1st week to Rs. 4.20 crore.

Jawaani Jaaneman dropped drastically in the second week. The bold film collected only Rs. 0.70 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections increased to Rs. 1.15 crore on Saturday. The rise in collections on Sunday was minuscule as the day closed at just Rs. 1.20 crore. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 3.05 crore only. Collections on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.40 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.35 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.35 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was only Rs. 1.55 crore. In this way, the film netted Rs. 4.60 crore in the second week, taking its total for 2 weeks to Rs. 23.75 crore.

LATEST POSITION | 27 April, 2019

The initial of AVENGERS: ENDGAME (English as well as Hindi dubbed) this week is phenomenal, and with the public reports being equally outstanding, the film is set to write new box-office history. This, despite being released only in 2K cinemas.

Kalank faced rejection from the paying public and proved a major disappointment at the turnstiles. Although it will just about cover its cost, the fate of the film at the box-office is terrible. It opened well on Wednesday (April 17) but the cracks started showing on the first day itself. The downward slide of collections from the second day sealed the film’s fate! It was expected to touch the Rs. 150-crore mark in the first week (of 9 days) but it reached exactly half of that!! The opening in Overseas was also good but the drop in collections after the weekend was perceptible. In India, after the film netted Rs. 20 crore on the first day (Wednesday, Mahavir Jayanti partial holiday) and only Rs. 10.50 crore on day 2 (Thursday), it collected only Rs. 10.75 crore on the third day despite the Good Friday holiday. Collections on Saturday (Rs. 9.25 crore) and Sunday (Rs. 11 crore) were rather pathetic. As the word of mouth was terrible, collections crashed during the weekdays. It netted Rs. 3.75 crore on Monday, Rs. 3.60 crore on Tuesday, Rs. 3.10 crore on Wednesday, and Rs. 2.60 crore on Thursday. In other words, the film added just Rs. 13.05 crore to the weekend (5-day) total of Rs. 61.50 crore, giving a first week (9 days) total of only Rs. 74.55 crore. The film is not expected to reach even the 100-crore mark! Abroad, it grossed an equivalent of Rs. 33.60 crore in the first 5-day weekend, after which collections slumped.

Shaapit Stree (dubbed) and the English original, The Curse Of The Weeping Woman, performed ordinarily in the first week. It opened on Thursday with a tally of Rs. 0.75 crore. Collections increased to Rs. 1.25 crore on Friday, and further to Rs. 1.40 crore on Saturday. The increase on Sunday wasn’t much and the day closed at Rs. 1.50 crore. In this way, the 4-day weekend’s total was Rs. 4.90 crore. Collections on Monday and Tuesday were Rs. 0.65 crore and Rs. 0.55 crore respectively. On Wednesday, it netted Rs. 0.45 crore while on Thursday, Rs. 0.40 crore. It therefore, added Rs. 2.05 crore in the weekdays. Its first week’s (8 days) total was, therefore, Rs. 6.95 crore.

The Tashkent Files grew stronger in the second week because of favourable public reports. Its performance at many places was better in 2nd week than in 1st week, which is a rarity! It collected Rs. 0.45 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections increased to Rs. 0.70 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 1 crore on Sunday. After a second weekend total of Rs. 2.15 crore, collections in the weekdays were also impressive: Monday – Rs. 0.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.58 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.42 crore. Hence, it added Rs. 1.95 crore to its kitty in the weekdays, taking the second week’s total to Rs. 4.10 crore. The grand total for 2 weeks was Rs. 7.59 crore.

R.A.W. collected Rs. 0.85 crore in the third weekend, and another Rs. 0.47 crore during the weekdays. By adding Rs. 1.32 crore to the kitty in 3rd week, its total for 3 weeks went up to Rs. 39.02 crore.

Kesari netted Rs. 1 crore in the fifth weekend, and Rs. 0.56 crore during the weekdays. The fifth week’s total of Rs. 1.56 crore took its grand total to Rs. 153.59 crore.

Bala did extremely well in 1st week. It was the widest release of Ayushmann Khurrana and, therefore, it took a bigger opening than his past films. It netted Rs. 10.15 crore on the first day. Collections jumped by 50% on Saturday which closed at Rs. 15.73 crore. The figure for Sunday was even more impressive at Rs. 18.07 crore. After a weekend of Rs. 43.95 crore, the film collected as follows in the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 8.26 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 9.52 crore (Guru Nanak Jayanti partial holiday), Wednesday – Rs. 5.20 crore, Thursday – Rs. 5.30 crore. By netting Rs. 28.28 crore in the weekdays, the film took its total for the first week to Rs. 72.23 crore. The film may not become Ayushmann’s highest-grossing film as it will be difficult for it to cross the Rs. 142-crore mark of his Dream Girl.

Bypass Road met with a disastrous fate in the first week, and, like the hero in the film, the film too met with an ‘accident’ — at the box-office. Its daily collections were in lakhs, not crores.

De De Pyaar De took a lukewarm start on Thursday (paid previews) this week. Collections on Friday started slow but positive mouth publicity helped collections increase as the day progressed.

Student Of The Year 2 could not live up to the expectations of the first part, SOTY. Although it did well in the first weekend, collections declined quite a bit on Monday. The onset of Ramzan also adversely affected collections but the main reason were the bad public reports of the film. It collected Rs. 11 crore on Friday, which was less than expected. Collections increased to Rs. 13 crore on Saturday but dropped to Rs. 11.50 crore on Sunday. The elections in North India and the IPL cricket final match on Sunday were also responsible for Sunday’s collections being lower than those on Saturday. The weekend total of Rs. 35.50 crore was not upto the mark but what was more frightening was the poor word of mouth for the film. Collections during the weekdays, as expected, dropped fast.
