Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures, Mojang Studios, Vertigo Entertainment, On The Roam and Domain Entertainment’s A Minecraft Movie (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; UA) is the story of four misfits who are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld which is a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they would have to master this new world — and also protect it from evil things. An unexpected, expert crafter also joins them. All the five ultimately become bold and reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative — the very skills they need to survive and thrive in the real world.
Allison Schroeder, Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer have written a story which is fantastical and, therefore, difficult to digest. It is based on the Minecraft video game. The screenplay, penned by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James and Chris Galletta, is not very engaging for the Indian audience. There are some scenes which entertain, but the drama doesn’t appeal much in totality.
Jason Momoa does well as Garrett Garrison, the Garbage Man. Jack Black is alright as expert crafter Steve. Emma Myers makes her mark as Natalie. Danielle Brooks is alright as Dawn. Sebastian Hansen is fair as Henry. Jennifer Coolidge lends decent support as vice principal Marlene. Others are okay.
Jared Hess’ direction is so-so. Mark Mothersbaugh’s background music is average. Enrique Chediak’s cinematography is proper. Grant Major’s production designing is reasonably good. James Thomas’ editing leaves something to be desired. Dubbing is quite nice.
On the whole, A Minecraft Movie is too ordinary to do anything worthwhile at the Hindi box-office. Flop.
