Raju Sapte, a popular art director of Marathi films and TV shows, committed suicide early today (3rd July) morning at his home at Bhor near Pune. He left a suicide video in which he accused Rakesh Maurya, honorary treasurer of Film Studio Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, of driving him to suicide. He is survived by his wife and a daughter. The last rites will be performed at Bhor.

In the video, Sapte said, Maurya had forced his contractual labourers to give statements to the effect that Sapte was not paying them their legal dues when the fact was that Sapte owed nothing to anybody. Such “false statements” taken under duress by Maurya against Sapte had cost the art director some assignments, he stated in his video recorded before he took the extreme step and uploaded by him on social media before dying. He said, he had lost one television show because of the false complaints gathered by Rakesh Maurya against him.

At the time of his death, Raju Sapte had at least five TV shows of Zee TV, besides some Marathi films. People in the trade, who knew him, vouch for his simplicity and straight dealings. He was also very talented, which explains why he was a busy art director.

Raju left his Bombay home for Bhor yesterday (2nd July) where he recorded the video and from where he uploaded it on social media. His family in Bombay did not know what was playing in his mind when he left for Bhor.

A police complaint has been filed at the Dindoshi police station as the Allied Mazdoor Union office falls under its jurisdiction.
