‘GUMNAAMI’ RAISES HACKLES OF NETAJI BOSE’S FAMILY | 31 August, 2019

Sujit Mukherjee’s Gumnaami has landed in trouble as 33 members of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s family have raised concerns over his portrayal in the film and have called for an end to the “long-running and sinister campaign to malign the image and legacy of the legendary leader”. The film propagates the theory that a recluse, Gumnaami Baba, who left behind trunk-loads of Netaji-related fake collectibles, could indeed have been Netaji himself. The family has said that it has been amply settled by the Justice Mukherjee Commission and the Justice Sahai Commission that Gumnaami Baba was not Netaji. On his part, director Srijit Mukherjee has said that the Mukherjee Commission had mentioned Gumnaami Baba in its report. He added that a filmmaker had every right to show all possible theories and talk about the mysteries surrounding Bose.

Incidentally, the film was cleared by the CBFC on 28th August.
