‘PANIPAT’ RELEASE NOT STAYED | 5 December, 2019

The Bombay high court on 3rd December granted no interim relief to Marathi writer Vishwas Patil who claimed that his literary copyright had been violated by Ashutosh Gowariker in Panipat. The court said, depiction of Marathas in a positive light was “not copyrightable”. Vishwas Patil had sought a stay on the film’s release, which was not granted. Justice S.C. Gupte said, Patil must bring material to court to make out a case. Patil had sought a private screening of the film as he was relying only on the trailer. Gowariker and the film’s producers argued that the case be dismissed as there was no copyright violation.
