The Calcutta high court will hear on September 8 a petition by Santanu Mukherjee, grandson of freedom fighter Gopal Chandra Mukherjee alias Gopal Patha, seeking cuts in filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files, slated for release today (September 5). Gopal Chandra Mukherjee was among those credited with defending neighbourhoods in central Calcutta during the Direct Action Day clashes of August 1946.
Santanu’s counsel told Justice Amrita Sinha, “If this movie is allowed to release, it will permanently tarnish the family’s honour. Vivek Agnihotri depicted him as being involved in massacre of members of a minority religious community. If the movie is released, everybody will see him in a completely different way…”
