Actor Javed Khan passed away today (14th February) at Surya Nursing Home in Bombay at 1 p.m. due to lung congestion. He had been suffering from breathing problems for the past one year. He was 75. He was cremated this evening at the Oshiwara crematorium in Bombay.
He had worked in small and big roles in a number of films. From comedy to villainy to character roles, Javed did them all with the same ease. He shot to fame with Nukkad, a TV serial on Doordarshan, in which he played Karim barber. Among the films he was seen in are Lagaan, Noorie, Chak De! India and Andaz Apna Apna. His dialogue, “Hum jeet gaye” in Lagaan became popular for the way in which he delivered it. In the 1980s, there used to be two actors with the same name, Javed Khan. Both were often confused for one another. The other Javed Khan played leading roles in a few films, mainly horror, and then sank into oblivion.
An alumni of the FTII, Javed Khan was associated with the IPTA for many years. Javed also served as the general secretary of the CINTAA for many years.
