SC REFUSES TO BAN RELEASE OF ‘THE KERALA STORY’ | 4 May, 2023

The Supreme Court on May 3 refused to entertain petitions seeking either a ban on the release of controversial film The Kerala Story or issuance of a disclaimer by the producer that the film was based on fictional accounts. The pleas sought the apex court’s intervention to stop vilification of the entire Muslim community.

A bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha said, “The resort to Article 32 to rush directly to the Supreme Court on everything is unwarranted. We are not a Super HC. Our HCs are manned by seasoned judges who can take a call on these matters.” The CJI added, “The high court judges have better idea about local conditions, so it’s better that the petitioners move the HC for appropriate relief.”
