This week’s CIRKUS took a disastrous initial. The comedy reportedly netted just Rs. 6.50 crore on the first day. The film has turned out to be a major debacle.
Avatar: The Way Of Water (dubbed and original English versions) has done tremendously well in the first week. Collections in the national multiplex chains were far better than in stand-alone multiplexes and single-screen cinemas. The 3D version performed better than the 2D version. All the versions put together netted Rs. 40 crore on the first day. Collections remained at the same level on Saturday (Rs. 40 crore) but jumped 17.5% on Sunday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 47 crore. After a weekend of Rs. 127 crore, collections during the weekdays were also very good: Monday – Rs. 16.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 14.50 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 12.75 crore, Thursday – Rs. 12.15 crore. With the total for the weekdays being Rs. 55.90 crore, the first week closed at an extraordinary Rs. 182.90 crore.
Ajay Wardhan fared poorly in 1st week all over.
Trahimam could not remain afloat in 1st week anywhere in India.

Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 2.02 crore and Rs. 2.56 crore respectively. After a total of Rs. 5.65 crore in the fifth weekend, collections during the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.88 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.84 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.83 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.79 crore. Dhondi Champya (Marathi) bombed in the first week itself all over Maharashtra.
Gairee (Marathi) failed to attract the public to the cinemas all over Maharashtra.
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER started on a fantastic note yesterday (16th December) in its original as well as dubbed versions. The 3D version, of course, opened far better than the 2D version. The Tamil dubbed and original (English) version’s release in Tamil Nadu was adversely affected because the stand-alone multiplexes refused to pay a higher percentage of share to the distributors than that agreed to by the national multiplex chains like PVR. Ego issues seem to have cropped up between the distributors and the multiplexes, because of which the film did not have a saturated release in TN.
Salaam Venky proved a debacle in 1st week all over. It barely managed to net Rs. 1.65 crore in the first week which, in many cinemas was also the last week.
Maarrich bombed in the first week all over.
Vadh won critical acclaim but its collections remained on the lower side in the first week.

Shadow Assassins could not do anything even remotely worthwhile in the first week.
Josef – Born In Grace bombed miserably in 1st week all over.
Vijayanand (dubbed) fared poorly in the first week all over.
An Action Hero could hardly remain afloat in its second week after a rather sad first week.
Bhediya collected Rs. 4.82 crore in the third weekend but crashed rather badly during the weekdays when it netted another Rs. 2 crore only. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 6.82 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 59.03 crore.
Drishyam 2 was unstoppable in its fourth week too. It started the fourth weekend with a take of Rs. 2.62 crore. Collections on Saturday jumped to Rs. 4.67 crore, because of which the film joined the Rs. 200-crore club after 23 days only. The jump on the fourth Sunday was huge. After netting Rs. 6.16 crore on Sunday (24th day), the film’s total for the fourth weekend went up to Rs. 13.45 crore. Collections on the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 1.61 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.57 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.43 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.34 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 5.95 crore. Fatwa (Marathi) flopped right from the word ‘go’ in the first week all over Maharashtra.
None of the new releases this week took even an average initial.
An Action Hero turned out to be a damp squib. Lack of even an average opening underlined the fact that the film was under-promoted and that the audience was not interested in watching hero Ayushmann Khurrana as an action hero which went against his public image. The film netted Rs. 1.30 crore on the first day. Collections increased on the second and third days but the growth was not noteworthy. The total for Saturday was Rs. 2.15 crore while for Sunday, it was Rs. 2.50 crore. After a first weekend of Rs. 5.95 crore, collections sank on the weekdays. They were: Monday – Rs. 0.80 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.65 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.55 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 2.70 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 8.65 crore.
Bhedia did fair business in the second weekend but collections again dropped badly during the weekdays. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 1.95 crore. Collections jumped by 90% on the second day so that the total for Saturday was Rs. 3.70 crore. The growth on Sunday was not too impressive. With a net total of Rs. 4.36 crore on Sunday, the second weekend closed at Rs. 10.01 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.20 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.90 crore. Collections for the weekdays were also impressive: Monday – Rs. 3.05 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.53 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.11 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.84 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 9.53 crore. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 32.82 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 196.29 crore. The film is all set to join the Rs. 200-crore club in the fourth weekend. Overseas, the film grossed an equivalent of Rs. 6.80 crore in its third week, taking the 3-week total to Rs. 49.02 crore!
Uunchai netted Rs. 1.23 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 0.63 crore during the weekdays. Total for 4th week: Rs. 1.86 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 31.68 crore.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (dubbed and original English version) collected around Rs. 2 crore in the fourth week, taking its grand total for 4 weeks to Rs. 68.30 crore.

Ekdam Kadak (Marathi) proved to be a naram fare all over Maharashtra in 1st week.
Baal Bhaarti (Marathi) bombed miserably in 1st week.
This week’s AN ACTION HERO seems to have faced rejection from the public right from the word ‘go’. It opened to dismal houses all over.
Bhediya met with a mixed response. Its dull collections in the first week shocked the trade. The overwhelming success of Drishyam 2 seems to have proved the major opposition to Bhediya as the former film in its second week collected far better than the latter in its first week! The creature comedy film netted Rs. 6.85 crore on the opening day. Collections grew on Saturday (Rs. 8.75 crore) as well as Sunday (Rs. 10.80 crore) but the jump was not up to the mark. After a dull first weekend of Rs. 26.40 crore, collections for the weekdays, of course, were way below the mark: Monday – Rs. 3.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 3 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.65 crore, Thursday – Rs. 2.30 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was an unimpressive Rs. 11.20 crore, taking the first week’s total to Rs. 37.60 crore.

Drishyam 2 in 2nd week outshone Bhediya in 1st week, that too, very markedly. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 7.87 crore. Collections on Saturday almost doubled so that the day closed at Rs. 14.05 crore. The jump on Sunday was also quite pronounced. It netted Rs. 17.32 crore, taking its total for the second weekend to Rs. 39.24 crore. Collections for the weekdays were no less impressive: Monday – Rs. 5.43 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 5.15 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 4.68 crore, Thursday – Rs. 4.31 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was an impressive Rs. 19.57 crore. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 58.81 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 163.47 crore. Having crossed the Rs. 150-crore mark, the suspense sequel is all set to join the Rs. 200-crore club in the fourth week! Overseas, it is turning out to be one of the best Ajay Devgan starrers ever! It grossed an equivalent of Rs. 13.40 crore in 2nd week abroad, taking its two-week total to Rs. 42.22 crore. (The first week’s gross total was Rs. 28.82 crore, and not Rs. 28.60 crore, as mentioned in this column last week.)

Jeta (Marathi) flopped badly in 1st week all over Maharashtra.
The shockingly poor initial of this week’s BHEDIYA has poured water on the euphoria created by the runaway success of last week’s DRISHYAM 2.
Drishyam 2 proves to be a super-hit. It soared high right from the word ‘go’ and was unstoppable all through the week, netting double-digit collections on each of the first five days of the first week. The film netted Rs. 15.38 crore on Friday, making it the second-highest opening of the year so far, next only to Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva. Collections jumped to Rs. 21.59 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 27.17 crore on Sunday, taking the first weekend’s total to an astounding Rs. 64.14 crore! Collections on the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 11.87 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 10.48 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 8.62 crore. The total for the weekdays, therefore, was a wonderful Rs. 40.52 crore! In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 104.66 crore. Its performance Overseas was very good. The second weekend started with a net of Rs. 1.31 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday increased to Rs. 2.42 crore and Rs. 2.87 crore respectively. Therefore, the second weekend closed at Rs. 6.60 crore. Collections almost doubled to Rs. 3.16 crore on Saturday, and increased marginally to Rs. 3.38 crore on Sunday, taking the second weekend’s total to Rs. 8.24 crore. Collections dipped markedly during the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 0.81 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.65 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.60 crore. Uunchai has found huge but limited appreciation — limited to people above 35-40 years of age — in the first week. Youngsters have not patronised the film in decent numbers because of which its collections, after picking up very well on Saturday and Sunday, settled at the mediocre level. Collections during the weekdays were very steady. The first day closed at Rs. 1.81 crore, but collections doubled on Saturday (Rs. 3.64 crore) and increased further on Sunday (Rs. 4.71 crore). Har Har Mahadev (Marathi) continued its victory march in 2nd week in many parts of Maharashtra.
Both the major Diwali releases, RAM SETU and THANK GOD, proved to be poor shows at the turnstiles.
Ram Setu took a fair opening on Tuesday (25th October) and netted Rs. 15.26 crore but it became clear the very next day that the fair collections were because of the Diwali holiday and festive spirit more than for the merits of the film, which were almost conspicuous by their absence. Collections dropped on Wednesday (Rs. 11.40 crore) and further on Thursday (Rs. 8.78 crore). The 3-day first week’s total was a dull Rs. 35.44 crore. The drop on Friday was even more pronounced. It fared poorly Overseas too.
Thank God also failed to find appreciation. After a dull start (considering that it was a Diwali release on Tuesday, 25th October) of Rs. 7.30 crore, collections fell fast and furiously on the balance two days of the first week. With net collections being Rs. 5.30 crore on the second day, and Rs. 3.35 crore on the third day, the 3-day first week’s total was a poor Rs. 15.95 crore.
