SUCCESS STILL ELUDING BOX-OFFICE

Goodbye proved to be a damp squib all over in its first week which, at many places, also turned out to be its last. It netted Rs. 0.94 crore on the first day of the first weekend. After the dismal start, collections picked up on Saturday and Sunday but not substantially. The second day closed at Rs. 1.37 crore while Sunday closed at Rs. 1.42 crore. After a first weekend total of Rs. 3.73 crore, collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.42 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.67 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.38 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.36 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was a dull Rs. 1.83 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 5.56 crore.

Nazar Andaaz bombed miserably in the first week.

Hindutva failed to make any mark at the box-office in its first week.

Chakki proved to be a debacle in the first week.

Aa Bhi Ja O Piya met with a disastrous fate at the turnstiles in 1st week.

Godfather (dubbed) did ordinary in 1st week. The original Telugu version collected far better down South. It netted Rs. 1.61 crore on the first day (Wednesday). Its opening was aided due to the Dassera holiday. Collections dropped to Rs. 0.86 crore on the second day (Thursday). Collections picked up during the weekend when the action film collected Rs. 0.97 crore on Friday, Rs. 1.45 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 1.66 crore on Sunday. In this way, the total for the first 5-day weekend was Rs. 6.55 crore. Collections dropped during the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 0.84 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.64 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.56 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.44 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 2.48 crore. In this way, the total for the 9-day week was Rs. 9.03 crore.

Vikram Vedha recorded dull collections in 2nd week. The first day of the second weekend registered a total of just Rs. 2.50 crore. Collections picked up on Saturday which closed at Rs. 4 crore. There was no increase on Sunday which also closed at Rs. 4 crore. Therefore, the total for the second weekend was Rs. 10.50 crore. The total for the weekdays was Rs. 6.25 crore. In this way, the second week closed at Rs. 16.75 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 75 crore.

Ponniyin Selvan – I (dubbed) was also ordinary in 2nd week. It netted Rs. 0.70 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections on Saturday doubled to Rs. 1.40 crore, and further increased to Rs. 1.70 crore on Sunday. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 3.80 crore. Collections during the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.52 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.47 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.43 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.40 crore. Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva is on its way out of the cinemas. All the versions together netted Rs. 1.75 crore in 5th week. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 249.75 crore.

Shivpratap Garudjhep (Marathi) did well in Maharashtra in the first weekend but dropped thereafter.

Aapdi Thaapdi (Marathi) bombed all over Maharashtra in the first week.

Hawahawai (Marathi) recorded dull collections in Maharashtra in the first week.

‘GOODBYE’ OPENS POORLY DESPITE CONCESSIONAL TICKET PRICING

GOODBYE opened yesterday (7th October) to very dull houses in spite of the tickets being sold at concessional rates… GODFATHER (dubbed), which opened on 5th October (Dassera day), did fairly well on account of the festive holiday but collections dropped from the second day onwards. The original Telugu version fared better.

Vikram Vedha proves to be a resounding flop. Its poor initial and its high cost have turned out to be the biggest minus points. It started with a take of only Rs. 9.50 crore on day 1. Collections on Saturday and Sunday picked up but not to the desired levels. The net total on Saturday was Rs. 12.50 crore while on Sunday, it was Rs. 14 crore. After a rather unimpressive weekend of just Rs. 36 crore, collections declined during the weekdays. In fact, even the festive Dassera holiday on Wednesday (sixth day) did not much help the film. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 5.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 5.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 7.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 3.50 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was only Rs. 22.25 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 58.25 crore. The film would have to do over Rs. 175 crore to break even. But even the Rs. 100-crore mark now looks like a distant dream.

Woh 3 Din bombed miserably in the first week everywhere.

Ponniyin Selvan – I (dubbed) did very ordinary business in the first week. Although the original Tamil version swept the box-office down South and Overseas too, the Hindi dubbed version did not fare too well. The first day recorded net collections of Rs. 1.85 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday went up to Rs. 2.50 crore and Rs. 3.25 crore respectively. Therefore, the total for the first weekend was Rs. 7.60 crore. Collections during the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.60 crore, Wednesday (Dassera holiday) – Rs. 2.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.10 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 6.65 crore. Hence the total for the first week was Rs. 14.25 crore.

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva did ordinary business in the fourth week. All the versions put together netted Rs. 6.45 crore in the fourth week. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 248 crore.

‘VIKRAM VEDHA’ OPENING SHOCKS TRADE

The dull opening of VIKRAM VEDHA yesterday (Sept. 30) sent shock waves in the trade. With a star cast like Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan and with a trailer which was talked about, it was expected to open at around Rs. 20 crore. But that was not to be. Friday seems to have closed at Rs. 9.50 crore only.

Chup met with a disastrous fate in the first week all over. It netted Rs. 2.75 crore on the first day, reaping the advantage of the National Cinema Day when admission rates in over 4,000 cinemas across India were reduced. Collections on Saturday dropped because the word of mouth was negative. After a net total of Rs. 1.75 crore on Saturday, collections on Sunday went up but not to the Friday level. With Sunday closing at Rs. 2.50 crore, the weekend total was Rs. 7 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.55 crore, Thursday – 0.35 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 9.50 crore.

Dhokha Round D Corner proved to be a debacle in 1st week all over. It netted barely Rs. 2.25 crore in the first week.

Prem Geet 3 (dubbed) was a non-starter. It fared miserably in the first week all over.

Ishq Pashmina bombed terribly in the first week all over.

Vanshree could do nothing to talk about in its first week.

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva got a huge advantage on the first day of the third weekend as the day (Sept. 23) was celebrated as the National Cinema Day when ticket prices in more than 4,000 cinemas were brought down to Rs. 75. It netted Rs. 8.65 crore on the first day of the third week. Collections on Saturday were Rs. 5.70 crore, and on Sunday, Rs. 6.45 crore. In this way, the third weekend closed at Rs. 20.80 crore. Collections on the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 1.93 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.91 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.51 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.40 crore. Hence the total for the weekdays was Rs. 6.75 crore. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 27.55 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 241.55 crore. Of this, the dubbed versions have jointly netted Rs. 23.05 crore.

Neighbours (Marathi) recorded absolutely poor collections in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

Raada (Marathi) fared badly in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Boyz 3 (Marathi) did quite well in its 2nd week in Maharashtra.

‘BRAHMASTRA’ CROSSES 200-CRORE MARK

The National Cinema Day yesterday (23rd September) saw tickets being sold at Rs. 75 for the entire day in around 4,000 cinemas, both multiplexes and single-screen. Hence footfalls in cinemas increased dramatically. BRAHMASTRA: PART ONE – SHIVA was the biggest beneficiary of this.

Middle-Class Love failed to make any mark whatsoever in the first week despite the film having fair merits. Lack of promotion and, therefore, awareness about the film did it in.

Jahaan Chaar Yaar bombed miserably in the first week.

Saroj Ka Rishta proved a damp squib in 1st week all over.

Siya failed to do anything worthwile in its first week.

Khalli Balli proved to be a debacle in the first week.

Matto Ki Saikil met with a disastrous fate at the box-office in its first week.

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva touched the Rs. 200-crore mark in 10 days. The second weekend recorded good collections but the weekdays were not half as exciting. The second weekend for all the versions (Hindi as well as South language dubbed) put together started with a take of Rs. 8.75 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday shot up to Rs. 14 crore. The Sunday total was Rs. 14.50 crore. The second weekend, therefore, closed at Rs. 37.25 crore. The total for 10 days, therefore, touched Rs. 200.25 crore. Collections for the weekdays were not up to the mark: Monday – Rs. 4.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 3.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3.10 crore, Thursday – Rs. 2.65 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 13.75 crore. Hence the second week’s total was Rs. 51 crore. Of this, the dubbed South language versions have netted Rs. 3 crore in all in the second week. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 214 crore.

Boyz 3 (Marathi) did extremely well in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Bhau Bali (Marathi) failed miserably in the first week in Maharashtra.

Roop Nagar Ke Cheetey (Marathi) failed to attract the public to the cinemas in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

‘BRAHMASTRA’ SHINES IN FIRST WEEKEND, DROPS THEREAFTER

Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva did exceedingly well in the first weekend but collections dropped during the weekdays. Even amidst the negativity in the trade and among the public, the high-on-VFX film managed to cross the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and the Rs. 150-crore mark by the end of the first week. While the 2D version did not do too well after the weekend, the 3D version fared better wherever it was released alongside the 2D version. The Telugu dubbed version did phenomenally well in the first weekend, surpassing the lifetime collections of many dubbed versions of earlier Hindi films. Its performance Overseas has also been fantastic. The domestic collections of the Hindi version on the first day totalled Rs. 31 crore. Collections on Saturday jumped to Rs. 35 crore, and further to Rs. 38.50 crore on Sunday. In this way, the first weekend’s total was Rs. 104.50 crore. The dubbed versions netted Rs. 10 crore in the first weekend. So, all the versions together netted Rs. 114.50 crore. Collections of the Hindi version on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 14 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 11 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 7.75 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 42 crore. The first week’s total of only the Hindi version was, therefore, Rs. 146.50 crore. The dubbed versions collectively added Rs. 6.50 crore to its kitty during the weekdays, taking the first week’s total to Rs. 16.50 crore. In this way, the total of all the versions put together for the first week was Rs. 163 crore. It may be recalled that right in its review, Information had predicted a first weekend of Rs. 100 crore or thereabouts and a 10-day total of Rs. 200 crore or thereabouts. To quote from our review: “Business of the 3D version in the initial days will be far, far more than that of the 2D version. It has the potential to touch or almost touch the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first weekend, and touch or almost touch the Rs. 200-crore mark by the end of the second weekend. For those who are concerned not just about box-office collections but also about cost-revenue economics, let it be said that for correct business analysis, part of the huge investment in the film is actually to be amortised by dividing it among three films — parts one, two and three.”

‘BRAHMASTRA’ OPENS HUGE AMIDST NEGATIVITY

The trade prayed hard for a film to open well at the box-office and break the bad spell of Bollywood. Exhibitors were at their wits’ end, clueless about how long they would be able to continue with the flopping fares. And when, finally, a film — BRAHMASTRA: PART ONE – SHIVA — did open to bumper houses yesterday (September 9), many in the trade lost no time in badmouthing it and predicting its doom. Amidst all the negativity, the costliest Hindi film emerged victorious by netting around Rs. 35 crore (Hindi plus dubbed South versions) on day 1. Public reports were far better than the tainted trade reports. Almost every reviewer ran down the film but the public seems to have given it a big thumbs up.

Token The Treasure turned out to be a disaster in the first week all over.

Sita Ramam (dubbed) managed just about average collections in spite of excellent reports. Lack of promotion of the dubbed version of the hit Telugu film and, therefore, awareness about its release and even its existence came in the way of the film realising its true potential.

Liger crashed further in 2nd week all over. After a total of Rs. 18 crore in the first week, it managed barely Rs. 2 crore in 2nd week. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 20 crore.

Karthikeya 2 (dubbed) did ordinary business in its fourth week. It netted Rs. 2.27 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 1.29 crore during the weekdays. Total for 4th week: Rs. 3.56 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 29.79 crore.

‘LIGER’ FLOPS BADLY

Collections were adversely affected in some shows on Sunday (August 28) due to the exciting India-Pakistan Asia Cup cricket match… Collections got a boost at many places (other than in Maharashtra) on Wednesday due to the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday.

Liger has proved to be a debacle. It could net only Rs. 18 crore in the first 8-day week. The evening paid preview shows in multiplexes on Thursday yielded Rs. 1.25 crore. Collections on Friday were Rs. 4.25 crore. Collections on Saturday increased only marginally so that the day closed at Rs. 4.50 crore. Collections on Sunday (Rs. 3.75 crore) were lower than on Friday and Saturday. After a weekend total of Rs. 13.75 crore, collections on the weekdays were unimpressive: Monday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.10 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.10 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.80 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 4.25 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 18 crore.

Holy Cow met with a disastrous fate all over in 1st week.

Aanchhi was a non-starter in the first week.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (animation, dubbed) did very ordinary in 1st week.

Karthikeya 2 (dubbed) did fairly well in third week. It netted Rs. 0.82 crore on the first day of the third weekend. Collections on Saturday doubled to Rs. 1.65 crore. The net collection figure on Sunday was Rs. 1.77 crore. After a third weekend total of Rs. 4.24 crore, collections on the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.68 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.63 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.85 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.54 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 2.70 crore. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 6.94 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 26.23 crore.

Samaira (Marathi) failed to make a mark in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

Rashtra (Marathi) could not do anything substantial in the first week in Maharashtra.

Dagadi Chawl 2 (Marathi) maintained fairly well in 2nd week in Maharashtra.

Takatak 2 (Marathi) dropped markedly in 2nd week in Maharashtra.

Fakt Mahilao Maate (Gujarati) did fairly well in its second week, but only during the weekend. Even in the weekend, collections were adversely affected on Sunday due to the cricket match. Collections during the weekdays were quite low. The 8-day Paryushan festival, which got over on 31st August, also saw collections dipping as the Gujarati Jains are busy with the festival and hence many of them refrain from frequenting cinemas. Overall, the second week’s total was around Rs. 2 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 8.57 crore.

DULL ‘LIGER’ OPENING SHOCKS TRADE

The weak initial of Liger this week (on Thursday, August 25 in the night shows in multiplexes, and again on Friday, August 26 in regular shows in multiplexes and single-screen cinemas) sent shock waves in the trade. Firstly, the logic behind releasing the Hindi version of the Hindi-Telugu bilingual film in the night shows on Thursday, that too, only in multiplexes, was unfathomable. As if that weren’t bad enough, the producers released the Telugu and the Tamil dubbed version in all the non-Southern circuits on Thursday in regular shows! The dull collections on Thursday (Rs. 1.25 crore) and again on Friday (Rs. 4.25 crore) matched the poor public reports. Yet another flop!

Dobaaraa proved a box-office dud. It netted extremely poor collections in the first week. The film collected only Rs. 2 crore in the first weekend. The already pathetic collections dropped even further during the weekdays so that the total for the four weekdays was just Rs. 0.90 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 2.90 crore.

Laal Singh Chaddha crashed further in the second week. It netted around Rs. 4 crore in the second weekend, and another Rs. 1.75 crore during the weekdays. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 5.75 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 57.15 crore.

Raksha Bandhan also crashed further in the second week. After collecting around Rs. 3 crore in the second weekend, it added another Rs. 1.50 crore during the weekdays. In this way, its total for 2nd week was only Rs. 4.50 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 43.25 crore.

Karthikeya 2 (dubbed) was super-strong in the second week too. It netted in 2nd week more than double of what it netted in 1st week. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 2.46 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday shot up to Rs. 3.04 crore and further to Rs. 4.07 crore on Sunday. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 9.57 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.98 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.15 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.95 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.89 crore. With the total for the weekdays being Rs. 3.97 crore, the second week closed at Rs. 13.54 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 19.29 crore. Super-hit!

Dagadi Chawl 2 (Marathi) did well in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Takatak 2 (Marathi) did fairly good business in the first week in Maharashtra.

De Dhakka 2 (Marathi) continued its victory march in Maharashtra in 3rd week too.

Fakt Mahilao Maate (Gujarati) swept the box-office in the first week all over Guajarat and Saurashtra. It reaped the benefit of the Janmashtami holiday on its first day (August 12). Extremely positive word of mouth saw collections maintaining quite well during the weekdays after a phenomenal and record-breaking first weekend. The film opened at a record Rs. 1.34 crore on Friday from a total of 300 properties (1,300 shows daily). Collections increased to Rs. 1.51 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 1.81 crore on Sunday. In this way, the film netted Rs. 4.66 crore in the first weekend, breaking records on each of the three days and, therefore, in the first weekend too. Collections for the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 0.52 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.49 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.48 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.42 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was an impressive Rs. 1.91 crore. In this way, the total for the first week was a record-breaking Rs. 6.57 crore!

BOTH BIG RELEASES OF LAST WEEK BOMB, SMALL DUBBED FILM TURNS OUT BIG AT BOX-OFFICE

Laal Singh Chaddha has performed badly in the first week. The first day (Thursday, August 11) closed at only Rs. 11.75 crore in spite of the Raksha Bandhan holiday. Collections dropped alarmingly on Friday which closed at Rs. 7.50 crore only. They picked up again on Saturday (Rs. 9.25 crore) and more on Sunday (Rs. 10.25 crore) but the increase on both the days was not what such a big-budget and star-cast film ought to have shown. The word of mouth for the film was so negative that it did not reap the advantage of even the national holiday of Independence Day on the fifth day (Monday, August 15) when it netted only Rs. 7.50 crore. After a 5-day weekend of only Rs. 46.25 crore, collections for the balance weekdays were dismal: Tuesday – Rs. 2.25 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.50 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.40 crore. The total for the three weekdays was a very sad Rs. 5.15 crore. In this way, the first week closed at a dismal Rs. 51.40 crore.

Raksha Bandhan also did not get the advantage of the best week of the year. The appreciation for the film was missing in the cities and came mainly from ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres which, in any case, do not contribute much to the kitty. It neither shone on the first day which was the festive holiday of Raksha Bandhan (Thursday, August 11) nor on the national holiday of Independence Day. It netted only Rs. 8.20 crore on the opening day. Collections dropped on Friday which closed at just Rs. 6.25 crore. The total for Saturday was also a dull Rs. 6.35 crore. The Sunday figure of Rs. 7 crore underlined the obvious — that the film had not found much acceptance. The net collection figure of Rs. 6.50 crore on Independence Day almost sealed the fate of the film! After a 5-day weekend total of Rs. 34.30 crore, collections on the balance weekdays were disastrous: Tuesday – Rs. 1.75 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.35 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.35 crore. The total for the three weekdays was, therefore, Rs. 4.45 crore. In this way, the first week closed at just Rs. 38.75 crore.

Karthikeya 2 (dubbed) started slow but collections picked up phenomenally as the week progressed. The dubbed Hindi version started with around 250 screens but the screen count reached 750 by the end of the first 6-day week because screens went on getting added with each passing day following very positive word of mouth and matching box-office collections. The film opened on Saturday (August 13) instead of Friday. The first day closed at just Rs. 7 lakh. Collections quadrupled on the second day (Sunday) which, therefore, closed at Rs. 28 lakh. The Independence Day holiday on Monday benefitted the film a lot because the third day closed at Rs. 1.10 crore. After a three-day weekend of Rs. 1.45 crore, collections during the balance weekdays were fantastic: Tuesday – Rs. 1.28 crore (better than on Independence Day, thanks to increase in number of shows and screens), Wednesday – Rs. 1.38 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.64 crore. The total for the three weekdays was, therefore, a phenomenal Rs. 4.30 crore, which was almost thrice the total for the weekend! In this way, the first 6-day week closed at Rs. 5.75 crore. Believe it or not, the second weekend started on a fantastic note as the collections on Friday (August 19) netted Rs. 2.46 crore! Hit!! The original Telugu version grossed Rs. 36 crore in the first week from Andhra and Telangana. The first week’s total for the other dubbed versions and for the Telugu version from the rest of India was Rs. 4.30 crore (gross). The original version of the film grossed an equivalent of Rs. 7.50 crore from Overseas in the first week.

Bullet Train (dubbed and the original English versions) did poor business in the second week all over.

DC League Of Super-Pets (animation; dubbed and the original English versions) did very ordinary business in 2nd week.

Ek Villain Returns is breathing its last. Its performance in the third week was terrible, thanks to the oppositions of the new releases. It netted only Rs. 10 lakh on the first day of the third weekend. Collections on the second day totalled Rs. 15 lakh, and on the third day, Rs. 17 lakh. The fourth day (Independence Day) closed at Rs. 18 lakh. After a 4-day weekend total of only Rs. 60 lakh, collections for the balance weekdays were as follows: Tuesday – Rs. 7 lakh, Wednesday – Rs. 6 lakh, Thursday – Rs. 6.25 lakh. Hence the total for the three weekdays was Rs. 19.25 lakh only. In this way, the third week closed at a paltry Rs. 79.25 lakh (Rs. 0.79 crore) only. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 40.99 crore.

Thor: Love And Thunder (dubbed and the original English versions) netted only Rs. 21 lakh in the sixth 4-day weekend (because of Independence Day holiday on Monday), and another Rs. 5 lakh during the balance three weekdays. Total for 6th week: Rs. 26 lakh (Rs. 0.26 crore). Grand total for 6 weeks: Rs. 100.36 crore.

De Dhakka 2 (Marathi) continued to do well in the second week all over Maharashtra.

Timepass 3 (Marathi) did fairly well in the third week in Maharashtra.

WORST COLLECTIONS IN BEST WEEK OF YEAR

The week that started on Thursday (August 11) is probably the best week of this year. With Raksha Bandhan festival on Thursday, Independence Day on Monday (August 15), Parsi New Year on Tuesday (August 16) and Janmashtami on Thursday next (August 18), the 8-day week has four extra holidays viz. one festival holiday (August 11), one national holiday (August 15) and two partial holidays (August 16 and 18), besides the weekend (August 13 and 14). In spite of so many holidays in a single week, the initials of the two new films — LAAL SINGH CHADDHA and RAKSHA BANDHAN — released on August 11, and the public reports of both the films suggest that the best week of the year from the box-office point of view might actually turn out to be the worst for the box-office.

Laal Singh Chaddha did not open well on Thursday (August 11). The opening (morning) shows weren’t too exciting but that was understandable as Raksha Bandhan festivities were on in full swing in Hindu households. However, collections did not show the jump that was required, even in the afternoon, evening and night shows. Collections on the second day (Friday, August 12) were also far from encouraging. Of course, collections do drop a day after a festive holiday like Raksha Bandhan but when the start itself is low (Rs. 11.50 crore on the first day), a drop of around 35% on the second day is alarming and indicative that the film has not been liked by the majority. Although figures for Saturday are awaited, it looks like Rs. 7.50 crore only. Clearly, a film for the classes and big cities only, and, therefore, a washout.

Raksha Bandhan did not get the advantage of the Raksha Bandhan festival on Thursday (August 11), its opening day. It netted only Rs. 8.20 crore after a fairly poor start. Of course, collections picked up as the day progressed and after festivities were over in Hindu households, but the jump was not what it would have been if the film had found universal acceptance. Collections, as expected after a festival holiday, dropped on the second day (Friday, August 12), but the 25% drop after the bad start on Thursday did not augur well for the film. The Friday figure seems to be in the region of Rs. 6.25 crore only. Clearly, the appreciation for the film has come mainly from ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres. Looking to the contribution of the smaller centres to the total earnings of a film, it can be predicted that in the final tally, the film’s theatrical earnings will be far from satisfactory.

Haryana proved disastrous in the first week all over.

Masoom Sawaal was a non-starter all over in 1st week.

Miami Se New York worked nowhere in the first week.

Match Of Life proved to be a debacle in the first week.

Naar Ka Sur fared miserably in 1st week all over.

Ramarao On Duty (dubbed) failed to generate even average collections in the first week. It was a debacle.

Bullet Train (dubbed and the original English versions) met with a poor fate in the first week all over.

DC League Of Super-Pets (animation; dubbed and the original English versions) did very average business in the first week.
