This week’s theatrical release, Badhaai Do, opened to dull houses — and understandably so. Its subject is very bold for Indian sensibilities and hence the film was expected to be a slow starter.
Kamathipura fared miserably in the first week in Gujarat.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) netted Rs. 0.73 crore in the seventh weekend, and another Rs. 0.40 crore during the weekdays. Total for 7th week: Rs. 1.13 crore. Grand total for 7 weeks: Rs. 107.22 crore.

Panghrun (Marathi) did very ordinary business in 1st week in Maharashtra.
Faas (Marathi) could not make any mark whatsoever in the first week in Maharashtra.
Law Of Love (Marathi) did disastrous business in the first week in Maharashtra.
Zombivli (Marathi) did average in 2nd week in Maharashtra.
With all the old releases except PUSHPA: THE RISE PART 1 having almost exhausted their runs at the ticket-windows, the box-office awaits the release of new films to give itself the much-needed push.
Lucknow Junction fared miserably in the first week in U.P.

Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) continued to be the one film which kept the cinemas going in this terrible period of no big film releases. It started its 7th week with a take of Rs. 0.48 crore on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 0.68 crore on Saturday. Sunday collections totalled Rs. 1.42 crore. In other words, the seventh weekend closed at Rs. 2.58 crore. In this way, the film crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark in 45 days as its total went up to Rs. 100.18 crore. Collections for the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 0.51 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.50 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.44 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.38 crore. Zombivli (Marathi) did fair business in 1st week in Maharashtra.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) barely managed to stay afloat in its 5th week. The highest it collected on a single day in the fifth week was Rs. 36 lakh on 26th January (Republic Day) because of the national holiday. Other than that, collections only on Saturday (Rs. 26 lakh) and Sunday (Rs. 34 lakh) were somewhat worth mentioning. The cricket film added Rs. 72 lakh to its kitty in the fifth weekend, and another Rs. 67 lakh during the weekdays. In other words, the total for the fifth week was just Rs. 1.39 crore. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 104.87 crore.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) also could not do much in its sixth week. The Republic Day holiday gave the film a slight boost but that was the only notable feature of its sixth week’s collections.
Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) was the only film which netted respectable figures in the week gone by. It managed to yield decent shares in its sixth week too in spite of being available on OTT where it is being repeat-viewed a number of times! It netted Rs. 0.57 crore on the first day of the sixth week. Collections jumped to Rs. 0.90 crore on the second day, and to Rs. 1.53 crore on the third day. This, therefore, resulted in a sixth weekend total of Rs. 3 crore. Collections for the weekdays got a huge boost on Republic Day. The individual collections for the four days were: Monday – Rs. 0.58 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.55 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.49 crore. The film will cross the Rs. 100-crore mark in the seventh week.
Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha (Marathi) crashed in 2nd week almost all over Maharashtra.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) fared extremely poorly in its 4th week. The film is now breathing its last. It netted Rs. 27 lakh on the first day of the fourth weekend. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 33 lakh and Rs. 49 lakh respectively. In this way, the total for the fourth weekend was a paltry Rs. 1.09 crore. Collections for the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 14 lakh, Tuesday – Rs. 15 lakh, Wednesday – Rs. 15 lakh, Thursday – Rs. 12 lakh. With a weekdays’ total of Rs. 56 lakh, the fourth week closed at Rs. 1.65 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 103.48 crore.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) is also on its last lap. The film collected Rs. 30 lakh on the first day of the fifth weekend. Collections on Saturday went up to Rs. 36 lakh, and on Sunday, to Rs. 40 lakh. Therefore, the fifth weekend’s total was Rs. 1.06 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 17 lakh, Tuesday – Rs. 16 lakh, Wednesday – Rs. 14 lakh, Thursday – Rs. 13 lakh. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 60 lakh. Hence the total for the fifth week was Rs. 1.66 crore. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 212.17 crore.
Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) started the fifth weekend with a take of Rs. 1.30 crore in spite of the film being available on OTT from the same day (January 14). Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 1.34 crore and Rs. 1.84 crore respectively. Therefore, the total for the fifth weekend was Rs. 4.48 crore. Collections for the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 0.70 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.66 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.63 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.59 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 2.58 crore. Hence the fifth week’s total was a handsome Rs. 7.06 crore. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 91.43 crore.
Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha (Marathi) did quite well in 1st week in pockets of Maharashtra only.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) came crashing down in the third week. The film will entail a loss of around Rs. 50 crore. Reasons for the huge expected loss are several. Of course, the Omicron variant raised its ugly head in full force just when the film opened. Having said that, it must be added that Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 and Spider-Man: No Way Home continued to do extraordinary business despite the same Omicron variant. Anyway, besides the COVID-19, there were other reasons, too, which were related to the film’s content. For one, the film did not find universal acceptance as the youth did not care much for it even though the above-35 age group loved it. The youngsters did not find the story of a bygone era interesting enough. They also did not find much background story of the characters (cricketers) to engage them. Youngsters also felt, the heroism of a hero was lacking as more than heroism, they attributed the Indian team’s victory to a stroke of luck. They missed the important point of strategy or planning in winning the World Cup. However, the other section of the audience, which found the film very good and even extraordinary, overlooked the points raised by the youth. Additionally, the film’s satellite and digital rights were sold before the lockdown at prices which were low and which do not match the prices today. The third week started with a take of only Rs. 0.80 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday went up to Rs. 1.29 crore and Rs. 1.47 crore respectively. Therefore, the third weekend closed at Rs. 3.56 crore. Collections for the weekdays were dull: Monday – Rs. 0.42 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.34 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.27 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.24 crore. The total for the weekdays was, therefore, Rs. 1.27 crore. In this way, the third week closed at Rs. 4.83 crore only. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 101.83 crore.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) is now in its last leg after doing phenomenal business in the first three weeks. The fourth week started with a net collection of Rs. 0.65 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday went up to Rs. 1 crore, and on Sunday, to Rs. 1.10 crore. Therefore, the fourth weekend closed at Rs. 2.75 crore. Collections for the weekdays were on the lower side: Monday – Rs. 0.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.37 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.33 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.29 crore. Hence the total for the weekdays was Rs. 1.39 crore. In this way, the fourth week’s total was Rs. 4.14 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 210.51 crore.
Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) continued to score in the fourth week too. It netted Rs. 1.96 crore on the first day of the fourth week. Collections on Saturday increased to Rs. 2.66 crore. The jump was more pronounced on Sunday which closed at Rs. 3.61 crore. In this way, the fourth weekend’s total was Rs. 8.23 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 1.18 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.06 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.94 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.85 crore. Thus, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 4.03 crore. In this way, the fourth week closed at Rs. 12.26 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 84.37 crore.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) did not reap much benefit of the absence of new releases last week. Most of the benefit went to Pushpa: The Rise Part 1. The second weekend of 83 started with a net collection of Rs. 4.36 crore on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 7.73 crore on Saturday but there was no jump on Sunday. In fact, the total for Sunday (Rs. 7.31 crore) was less than that on Saturday. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 19.40 crore. Collections for the weekdays were quite disappointing: Monday – Rs. 2.01 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.52 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.12 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.08 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was an unimpressive Rs. 5.73 crore. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 25.13 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 97 crore.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) did very well in the third weekend too, crossing the Rs. 200-crore mark and becoming the biggest hit of 2021. The third weekend started with a net collection of Rs. 3 crore on the first day. Collections jumped to Rs. 4.92 crore on Saturday. The total on Sunday was Rs. 4.75 crore. So, the third weekend closed at Rs. 12.67 crore, taking the total for 18 days (it was released on Thursday, hence the first week was of 8 days) to Rs. 202.34 crore. Collections for the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.10 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.78 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 4.03 crore. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 16.70 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 206.37 crore.
Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) did outstanding business in North India in the third week too. It reaped the maximum benefit of the absence of new releases last week. It collected Rs. 3.21 crore on the first day of the third weekend, and, therefore, crossed the Rs. 50-crore mark by taking the 15-day total to Rs. 51.09 crore. Collections shot up to Rs. 5.69 crore on Saturday. The Sunday total (Rs. 6.14 crore) was the highest single-day collection of the film since the day it released!! Such a phenomenal growth on the 17th day is unprecedented. In this way, the third weekend’s total of Rs. 15.04 crore was almost one-and-a-half times the second weekend’s total (Rs. 10.10 crore) and better than the first weekend’s total (Rs. 13.31 crore)! Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2.74 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.37 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.14 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.94 crore. So, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 9.19 crore. Total for 3rd week: Rs. 24.23 crore. Point to note is that the third week’s total (Rs. 24.23 crore) is better than the second week’s total (19.79 crore). Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 72.11 crore.
Jhimma (Marathi) completed 50 days yesterday (7th January). It has proven to be a blockbuster.
83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) did well in the first week, mainly in the city-based properties of the national multiplex chains and some other stand-alone multiplexes. Its performance in single-screen cinemas and non-metropolitan cities and towns, generally speaking, was not up to the mark due to limited youth patronage. Of course, it was also badly hit by new COVID-19 restrictions imposed by various state governments from its first/second day. While many people in the over-40 age group have loved the film, those in the 15-35 age group haven’t liked it enough to inspire their active involvement. It netted only Rs. 12.64 crore on the first day. Although collections increased on Saturday, the jump was way less than expected, considering that it was a Christmas holiday. The second day closed at Rs. 16.95 crore. Collections on Sunday totalled Rs. 17.41 crore, taking the first weekend’s total Rs. 47 crore. Collections during the weekdays were only fair, badly affected in Delhi-U.P. due to cinema closure in Delhi from Wednesday. Monday – Rs. 7.29 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 6.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 5.67 crore, Thursday – Rs. 5.21 crore. The total for the weekdays, therefore, was Rs. 24.87 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 71.87 crore.
The Matrix Resurrections (dubbed and English) did not make any mark at the box-office in 1st week.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) continued to score in the second week. It was phenomenal in the second weekend and did well in the weekdays too. It netted Rs. 6.75 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections jumped by 50% on Saturday (Christmas holiday) so that the day closed at Rs. 10.10 crore. The total on Sunday was Rs. 10 crore. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 26.85 crore. Collections during the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 4.45 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 3.65 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 3.40 crore, Thursday – Rs. 3.25 crore. The film will cross the Rs. 200-crore mark in the third week!

With a further jump on Sunday, the day closed at Rs. 4.21 crore. In this way, the second weekend’s total was Rs. 10.10 crore. Pertinent to note that the first weekend had closed at Rs. 13.31 crore. The film will cross the Rs. 50-crore mark in the third weekend itself!!
The lacklustre initial of 83 this week has sent shock waves in the industry. While collections were decent in the high-end multiplexes, they were shockingly poor in most other multiplexes and in single-screen cinemas.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tami and Telugu dubbed versions) did extraordinary business in the first week. After an absolutely flying start on Thursday (Rs. 32.67 crore), it netted Rs. 20.37 crore on Friday, Rs. 26.10 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 29.23 crore on Sunday.
