‘PUSHPA’ REAPS BENEFIT OF ABSENCE OF NEW FILM RELEASES

83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) did not reap much benefit of the absence of new releases last week. Most of the benefit went to Pushpa: The Rise Part 1. The second weekend of 83 started with a net collection of Rs. 4.36 crore on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 7.73 crore on Saturday but there was no jump on Sunday. In fact, the total for Sunday (Rs. 7.31 crore) was less than that on Saturday. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 19.40 crore. Collections for the weekdays were quite disappointing: Monday – Rs. 2.01 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.52 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.12 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.08 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was an unimpressive Rs. 5.73 crore. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 25.13 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 97 crore.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) did very well in the third weekend too, crossing the Rs. 200-crore mark and becoming the biggest hit of 2021. The third weekend started with a net collection of Rs. 3 crore on the first day. Collections jumped to Rs. 4.92 crore on Saturday. The total on Sunday was Rs. 4.75 crore. So, the third weekend closed at Rs. 12.67 crore, taking the total for 18 days (it was released on Thursday, hence the first week was of 8 days) to Rs. 202.34 crore. Collections for the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 1.25 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.10 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.78 crore. Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) did outstanding business in North India in the third week too. It reaped the maximum benefit of the absence of new releases last week. It collected Rs. 3.21 crore on the first day of the third weekend, and, therefore, crossed the Rs. 50-crore mark by taking the 15-day total to Rs. 51.09 crore. Collections shot up to Rs. 5.69 crore on Saturday. The Sunday total (Rs. 6.14 crore) was the highest single-day collection of the film since the day it released!! Such a phenomenal growth on the 17th day is unprecedented. In this way, the third weekend’s total of Rs. 15.04 crore was almost one-and-a-half times the second weekend’s total (Rs. 10.10 crore) and better than the first weekend’s total (Rs. 13.31 crore)! ’83’ SCORES IN POCKETS, LEAVES TRADE SAD

83 (Hindi and all dubbed versions) did well in the first week, mainly in the city-based properties of the national multiplex chains and some other stand-alone multiplexes. Its performance in single-screen cinemas and non-metropolitan cities and towns, generally speaking, was not up to the mark due to limited youth patronage. Of course, it was also badly hit by new COVID-19 restrictions imposed by various state governments from its first/second day. While many people in the over-40 age group have loved the film, those in the 15-35 age group haven’t liked it enough to inspire their active involvement. It netted only Rs. 12.64 crore on the first day. Although collections increased on Saturday, the jump was way less than expected, considering that it was a Christmas holiday. The second day closed at Rs. 16.95 crore. Collections on Sunday totalled Rs. 17.41 crore, taking the first weekend’s total Rs. 47 crore. Collections during the weekdays were only fair, badly affected in Delhi-U.P. due to cinema closure in Delhi from Wednesday. Monday – Rs. 7.29 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 6.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 5.67 crore, Thursday – Rs. 5.21 crore. The total for the weekdays, therefore, was Rs. 24.87 crore. It netted Rs. 6.75 crore on the first day of the second weekend. Collections jumped by 50% on Saturday (Christmas holiday) so that the day closed at Rs. 10.10 crore. Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed), for its price, is a super-duper hit in spite of COVID-19 restrictions and closure of Delhi cinemas from December 29. The second weekend started on a fantastic note with a total of Rs. 2.42 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday jumped by almost 45%, to Rs. 3.47 crore. With a further jump on Sunday, the day closed at Rs. 4.21 crore. In this way, the second weekend’s total was Rs. 10.10 crore. Pertinent to note that the first weekend had closed at Rs. 13.31 crore. ’83’ OPENING SHOCKS TRADE

The lacklustre initial of 83 this week has sent shock waves in the industry. While collections were decent in the high-end multiplexes, they were shockingly poor in most other multiplexes and in single-screen cinemas.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tami and Telugu dubbed versions) did extraordinary business in the first week. After an absolutely flying start on Thursday (Rs. 32.67 crore), it netted Rs. 20.37 crore on Friday, Rs. 26.10 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 29.23 crore on Sunday. The total for the 4-day weekend was, therefore, a splendid Rs. 108.37 crore. In other words, the franchise film crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark in the first (4-day) weekend itself. Spider-Man: No Way Home (original English and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions) took an absolutely breathtaking start on Thursday (December 16), netting Rs. 32.67 crore on the first day. Point to note is that the Hollywood film collected such a huge figure in spite of the fear of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, capacity restrictions in some states, and the odd-day release without a holiday. Its opening day’s total was three-and-a-half times the initial of the previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home. Shows as early as at 5 a.m. were house-full! This was the second-biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film in India. According to the Multiplex Association of India, the franchise film saw the second busiest advance ticket sales for any film in the history of cinema exhibition! The first day’s total in India ranked no. 1 in Asia, and fifth in the world.

Pushpa: The Rise Part 1 (dubbed) opened (on Friday, December 17) extremely well for a dubbed film. At places, the start was extraordinary. The original Telugu version, of course, opened to bumper houses.

Collections on Friday dropped to Rs. 2.10 crore because the word of mouth was negative all over. The Saturday figure of Rs. 2.30 crore was also far from impressive. ‘SATYAMEVA JAYATE 2’ OPENS TO DULL HOUSES, ‘ANTIM’ BETTER BUT OPENING NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Satyameva Jayate 2, which opened this week on Thursday, took a poor start. More shocking than the weak initial on Thursday were the even weaker collections on the second day (Friday). Antim also could not draw the audiences to the cinemas on the first day (Friday) in large numbers. ‘SOORYAVANSHI’ OPENS HUGE

Sooryavanshi opened huge this week. The first major release in 19 months was off to a fair start yesterday because of the confusion (in public minds) about whether it would or wouldn’t release in the national multiplex chains. But collections shot through the roof as the day progressed and as word about the film’s immense merits spread. Although the total for the day is still not known, it is definitely in the region of Rs. 27 crore, which is a mind-boggling figure, given that several states have still not permitted cinemas to function at full capacity, and there’s still the fear of COVID-19 in people’s minds.

Bekhudi proved to be a disaster in the first week.

Dilphire could not do anything worthwhile in 1st week.
