‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ OPENS BIG ON ODD DAY, LAST WEEK’S FILMS DISAPPOINT

Hollywood’s Thor: Love And Thunder opened to excellent houses on Thursday. Whether it was the dubbed Hindi version or the original English version, collections on the first day were extremely good in spite of the fact that it was an odd day (Thursday) and not a holiday. The total for all the dubbed versions and the English version put together on the first day was Rs. 18.60 crore! Collections dropped on day 2.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu dubbed, Malayalam dubbed and Kannada dubbed) fared average in the first week in select multiplexes only. Collections were low as only the class audiences have liked the film. The first day closed at Rs. 1.25 crore. Collections doubled on Saturday (Rs. 2.50 crore) and trebled (as compared to the first day) on Sunday (Rs. 3.75 crore). The two-fold and three-fold jump was good but not very exciting because the base figure for the multiplier jump was low. After a weekend of Rs. 7.50 crore, collections on the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 1.31 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.28 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.26 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.14 crore. The breakdown: Hindi and Hinglish versions – Rs. 10.72 crore; Tamil version – Rs. 0.76 crore; Telugu dubbed version – Rs. 0.75 crore; Malayalam dubbed version – Rs. 0.25 crore; Kannada dubbed version – Rs. 0.01 crore.

Rashtra Kavach Om could not do much in its first week. Collections in single-screen cinemas were, at least, average in the weekend but the film’s fate in multiplexes was bad. The first day closed at just Rs. 1.50 crore. Collections on Saturday increased marginally, to Rs. 1.75 crore. The Sunday collection figure (Rs. 1.66 crore) was lower than that of Saturday, giving an indication that the film’s future was doomed. After a pathetic first weekend of only Rs. 4.85 crore, collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.75 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.60 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.45 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.30 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was a horrifying Rs. 2.10 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 6.95 crore.

Dear Molly bombed miserably in the first week all over.

Minions: The Rise Of Gru (dubbed and the original English versions; animation) fared poorly in the first week. It started the weekend with a nett collection figure of Rs. 0.62 crore on Thursday (paid previews). Collections on Friday increased to Rs. 0.84 crore but the jump on Saturday and Sunday was huge so that the days closed at Rs. 1.80 crore and Rs. 2.13 crore respectively. Therefore, the first 4 day weekend’s total was Rs. 5.39 crore. Collections during the weekdays were: Monday – Rs. 0.46 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.44 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.46 crore, Thursday 0.22 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 1.58 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 6.97 crore.

Jugjugg Jeeyo dropped more than 50% in 2nd week after a below-the-mark first week. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 3 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday and Sunday increased to Rs. 4.75 crore and Rs. 6.10 crore respectively so that the second weekend closed at Rs. 13.85 crore. Collections fell dramatically during the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 1.80 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.70 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.60 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.95 crore. Marathi film Dharmaveer and Punjabi film Saunkan Saunkne have opened today (May 13) to fantastic houses. The Punjabi film is poised to become a blockbuster.

The Conversion bombed miserably in 1st week all over.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (dubbed and original English versions) did well in the first weekend but collections began to drop quite markedly during the weekdays. Still, it managed good collections for the first week and joined the Rs. 100-crore club. The first week started with a Friday total of Rs. 27.75 crore. Collections on Satuday and Sunday were Rs. 26.25 crore and Rs. 25 crore respectively. In this way, the first weekend closed at Rs. 79 crore! Collections for the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 8 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 6 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 5 crore, Thursday – Rs. 4 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was just Rs. 23 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 102 crore.

Runway 34 crashed in the second week after an uneventful 1st week. The second weekend commenced with a take of only Rs. 1 crore on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 1.65 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 2.10 crore on Sunday. The second weekend’s total was, therefore, Rs. 4.75 crore only. Collections for the weekdays were rather dull: Monday – Rs. 0.60 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.60 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.50 crore. WORST COLLECTIONS IN BEST WEEK OF YEAR

The week that started on Thursday (August 11) is probably the best week of this year. With Raksha Bandhan festival on Thursday, Independence Day on Monday (August 15), Parsi New Year on Tuesday (August 16) and Janmashtami on Thursday next (August 18), the 8-day week has four extra holidays viz. one festival holiday (August 11), one national holiday (August 15) and two partial holidays (August 16 and 18), besides the weekend (August 13 and 14). In spite of so many holidays in a single week, the initials of the two new films — LAAL SINGH CHADDHA and RAKSHA BANDHAN — released on August 11, and the public reports of both the films suggest that the best week of the year from the box-office point of view might actually turn out to be the worst for the box-office.

Laal Singh Chaddha did not open well on Thursday (August 11). The opening (morning) shows weren’t too exciting but that was understandable as Raksha Bandhan festivities were on in full swing in Hindu households. However, collections did not show the jump that was required, even in the afternoon, evening and night shows. Collections on the second day (Friday, August 12) were also far from encouraging. Of course, collections do drop a day after a festive holiday like Raksha Bandhan but when the start itself is low (Rs. 11.50 crore on the first day), a drop of around 35% on the second day is alarming and indicative that the film has not been liked by the majority. Although figures for Saturday are awaited, it looks like Rs. 7.50 crore only. Clearly, a film for the classes and big cities only, and, therefore, a washout.

Raksha Bandhan did not get the advantage of the Raksha Bandhan festival on Thursday (August 11), its opening day. It netted only Rs. 8.20 crore after a fairly poor start. Of course, collections picked up as the day progressed and after festivities were over in Hindu households, but the jump was not what it would have been if the film had found universal acceptance. Collections, as expected after a festival holiday, dropped on the second day (Friday, August 12), but the 25% drop after the bad start on Thursday did not augur well for the film. The Friday figure seems to be in the region of Rs. 6.25 crore only. Clearly, the appreciation for the film has come mainly from ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres. Looking to the contribution of the smaller centres to the total earnings of a film, it can be predicted that in the final tally, the film’s theatrical earnings will be far from satisfactory.

Haryana proved disastrous in the first week all over.

Masoom Sawaal was a non-starter all over in 1st week.

Miami Se New York worked nowhere in the first week.

Match Of Life proved to be a debacle in the first week.

Naar Ka Sur fared miserably in 1st week all over.

Ramarao On Duty (dubbed) failed to generate even average collections in the first week. It was a debacle.

Bullet Train (dubbed and the original English versions) met with a poor fate in the first week all over.

DC League Of Super-Pets (animation; dubbed and the original English versions) did very average business in the first week.

Ek Villain Returns did not do much in the second week in spite of no major opposition. It collected Rs. 6 crore during the second weekend, and another Rs. 2.40 crore during the weekdays. With a second week total of Rs. 8.40 crore, the total for 2 weeks was a lukewarm Rs. 40.20 crore.

Thor: Love And Thunder (dubbed and the original English versions) did ordinary in its fifth week but crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark. It added Rs. 0.44 crore to its kitty in the weekend, and another Rs. 0.22 crore during the weekdays. Total for 5th week: Rs. 0.66 crore to its kitty in 5th week. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 100.10 crore.

De Dhakka 2 (Marathi) fared well in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Ekda Kay Zala! (Marathi) could not do anything substantial in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

Timepass 3 (Marathi) continued to do well in the second week too all over Maharashtra.

‘GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI’ SCORES WONDERFULLY WELL, THIS WEEK’S ‘THE BATMAN’ BATS WELL, ‘JHUND’ DISAPPOINTS

This week’s THE BATMAN (Hindi dubbed and original English version) started slow in the morning shows yesterday (March 4) but collections picked up well as the day progressed. On the other hand, football film JHUND failed to score a goal anywhere.

Gangubai Kathiawadi has done exceptionally well in the first week, considering that normalcy is yet to return and also given that the film rests on the shoulders of a female character and does not have a hero. It started off well with a take of Rs. 9.75 crore on Friday. Collections jumped by Rs. 3 crore on Saturday which closed at Rs. 12.75 crore. The figure for Sunday was a phenomenal Rs. 15.25 crore, taking the first weekend’s total to Rs. 37.75 crore. Collections for the weekdays were also very good: Monday – Rs. 8.25 crore, Tuesday (partial holiday for Shivratri) – Rs. 9.25 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 6.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 5.50 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 29.25 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 67 crore. The second weekend is expected to be superb in spite of the opposition of this week’s The Batman, because of the 100% capacity now permitted in cinemas of Maharashtra and Delhi also.

Valimai (dubbed), as expected, proved a damp squib in the first week all over. The death-defying action scenes could not save the dubbed version from doom because the youth among the Hindi film-going audience is done with action of the kind shown in the film, more so if the content in the film is weak (as it was in the present case).

Uncharted (dubbed) did quite well in 2nd week too. The original English version continued to do better business in the second week.

Luck Down (Marathi) did very ordinary business in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

Pondicherry (Marathi) failed miserably in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Chabuk (Marathi) met with a disastrous fate in 1st week all over Maharashtra.

Pawankhind (Marathi) continued its victory march in the second week also. Its collections all over Maharashtra were outstanding.

The Flash (dubbed and the original English versions) opened on Thursday, netting approximately Rs. 4.30 crore on the first day.

Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (dubbed and the original English versions) did ordinary business in 1st week. The first day’s (Thursday) collections totalled Rs. 3.50 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was only Rs. 4.80 crore. In this way, the first week closed at Rs. 23.80 crore.

Zara Hat Ke Zara Bach Ke did well in 2nd week too, falling around 31% only. Lack of a new formidable opposition last week ensured that the maximum footfalls were reserved for ZHKZBK. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 3.42 crore. The total for Saturday went up to Rs. 5.76 crore while for Sunday, it went up even more, to Rs. 7.02 crore. Hence the second weekend closed at Rs. 16.20 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2.70 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 2.52 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 2.25 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.98 crore. After a weekend total of Rs. 7.12 crore, collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.87 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.83 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.83 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.60 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 3.13 crore. In this way, the second week closed at Rs. 10.25 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 36.07 crore.

Fast X (dubbed and the original English versions) added a little more than Rs. 2 crore to its kitty in the fourth week. The fourth weekend commenced with a net collection of Rs. 0.29 crore on Friday. The total for Saturday was Rs. 0.56 crore while for Sunday, it was Rs. 0.65 crore. THE KASHMIR FILES, released in only 700 screens, managed a very good first day. In fact, after the excellent response, screens and shows were added as the day progressed. However, the huge-budgeted RADHE SHYAM failed to find love among the public.

Jhund, which started slow last week, could not impress the audience. It netted Rs. 1.10 crore on the opening day. Collections increased to Rs. 1.75 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 2.35 crore on Sunday. After a weekend total of Rs. 5.20 crore only, collections for the weekdays were even more unimpressive: Monday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Tuesday (Women’s Day) – Rs. 1.10 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.90 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.85 crore. Thus, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 3.75 crore. Therefore, the total for the first week was Rs. 8.95 crore.

MUMBAI SAGA opened better in single-screen cinemas today than multiplexes because of the action content. The opening show’s figures were just about average but collections in several single-screen cinemas picked up during the day.

Roohi did well in the first four-day weekend as it got the advantage of being the first star-cast release post-lockdown and, more importantly, after more than half the states in India allowed cinemas to work at full capacity. The public reports, except in pockets in the hinterland, were not upto the mark and hence collections were down during the weekdays. The first day’s (Thursday) net all-India total was Rs. 2.75 crore. Collections on Saturday and Sunday picked up again as the film netted Rs. 3.25 crore and Rs. 3.65 crore respectively. In this way, the film netted Rs. 11.65 crore in the first four-day weekend.
