Swarswamini Asha, a biography of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, was released on 28th June in Bombay at the hands of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The book has contributions by 90 authors and has interesting anecdotes and episodes from her life. It includes rare photographs which trace the singer’s artistic journey and evolution.
Mohan Bhagwat said at the book launch that the Mangeshkar family had instilled patriotism and devotion through music. He added that the purpose of music was not only to entertain but also to build the nation. In a touching gesture, playback singer Sonu Nigam kissed Asha Bhosle’s feet and then washed them as a mark of respect.
On this occasion, Asha Bhosle regaled the audience with anecdotes from her childhood. She reminisced about her connection with Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar and was joined by her brother, music director Hridaynath Mangeshkar. She also reflected on the profound impact various music directors had on her singing. The 90-year-old from the illustrious Mangeshkar family joked that she had lived enough and “I think, my end is coming”.
The function was attended by a number of people from the music world.
