The Delhi high court on January 25, 2022 said that it would consider reducing the fine imposed on actress and green activist Juhi Chawla, for the ‘abuse of the process of law’ in relation to her 5G lawsuit. The high court had slapped her with a fine of Rs. 20 lakh in June last year. It may now consider reducing that to Rs. 2 lakh on a condition that she would do some public service.
It may be recalled that Juhi had filed a plea against the setting up of 5G wireless networks in the country last year. The high court on 2nd June, 2021 rejected the plea as being “defective, not maintainable”. Two days later, it slapped a fine of Rs. 20 lakh on her, saying that the plea had been filed by her to gain publicity. In support of its claim that her application was a mere publicity gimmick, it explained that Juhi Chawla had shared the video conference link for the online court hearing on social media and had invited people to attend the hearing.
Juhi later appealed to the court to reduce the fine amount.
