Noted Marathi film actress Jyoti Chandekar breathed her last in Pune yesterday (16th August) at the age of 68. She had not been keeping well and was receiving treatment in Pune. She will be cremated today (17th) at 11 a.m. at the Vaikunth crematorium.
Jyoti Chandekar was the mother of popular Marathi film actress Tejaswini Pandit.
Jyoti had taken ill on the sets of TV serial Tharala Tar Mag last year when her sodium levels went down. She took two months to recuperate but the Star Pravah channel waited for her to resume work in the serial, changing the screenplay to accommodate her absence for two months. Her character of Poorna Aji in the serial made her a darling of the viewers and a Maharashtrian household name.
Jyoti Chandekar had a glorious career spanning more than five decades as she had started out when she was just 12. Among the films she had acted in are Mee Sindhutai Sapkal, Guru, Dholki, Paulwaat, Sukhant, Duniya Kari Salaam, Shyamchi Aai (2023) and Ticha Umbartha. In the last-named film, directed by Dipti Ghonsikar, Jyoti played her real-life daughter’s (Tejaswini Pandit) mother-in-law. Performances of both the actresses were highly appreciated. On television, she also starred in such popular TV serials as Tu Saubhagyavati Ho and Chhatriwali.
