Mattel Studios and Escape Artists’ He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe (dubbed from Hollywood film Masters Of The Universe; UA) is the story of Prince Adam Glenn (Nicholas Galitzine), who, after being separated for 15 years, returns from his mother’s home, planet Earth, to his father’s home, planet Eternia. Once there, he is shocked to discover that his home has been destroyed and planet Eternia is now under the rule of warlord and sorcerer Skeletor (Jared Leto). In order to reclaim his family legacy and save the world, Adam joins forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba). Adam finally embraces who he is truly meant to be — He-Man, the most powerful man in the Universe.
Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Alex Litrak and Michael Finch have written a story which doesn’t offer much novelty as films with similar story-lines have been seen earlier. The screenplay, penned by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and David Callaham, is interesting only in parts. Some portions are predictable and boring too.
Nicholas Galitzine acts well as Adam Glenn/He-Man. Camila Mendes is good in the role of Teela. Jared Leto performs ably as Skeletor. Alison Brie lends decent support as Evil-Lyn/Evelyn Powers. James Purefoy is adequate as King Randor. Charlotte Riley is okay as Queen Marlena Glenn. Morena Baccarin has her moments as the sorceress. Idris Elba makes his mark as Man-At-Arms. Artie Wilkinson-Hunt (as young Adam) and Eire Farrell (as young Teela) are alright. Others do as desired.
Travis Knight’s direction is fair. His narration doesn’t consume the audience completely. Daniel Pemberton’s background music is fair. Fabian Wagner’s cinematography is impressive. Guy Hendrix Dyas’ production designing is of a fine standard. Paul Rubell’s editing could’ve been sharper. Dubbing is good.
On the whole, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe is an ordinary fare.
