COURT ASKS CENTRE ABOUT ACTION TAKEN AGAINST NON-NBSA TV CHANNELS IN RAKUL CASE | 5 March, 2021

The Delhi high court on 4th March directed the Centre to inform if action had been taken against TV channels which were not members of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA). The high court was hearing a complaint filed by Rakul Preet Singh where her name was linked with Rhea Chakraborty in the drugs case that was filed after Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise.

The court sought to know if the I & B ministry had take action and if channels outside the purview of the NBSA had violated the Cable TV Networks Act in broadcasting content relating to Rakul. Justice Pratibha M. Singh sought the status report and listed the matter for further hearing on May 20.

On its part, the I & B ministry filed an affidavit that NBSA had passed 10 orders in respect of the complaint filed by Rakul. It informed the court that these orders related to action taken by NBSA on news reports or programmes telecast by 13 TV channels. The ministry also informed the high court that it was examining the representation of Rakul where she had sought the court’s intervention to ensure that the media did not broadcast or publish any content linking her name with Rhea Chakraborty’s in the drugs case.
