GOOD, NOT GREAT, START FOR BOTH NEW RELEASES

DUNKI and SALAAR (dubbed) opened on Thursday (December 21) and Friday (December 22) respectively to good houses. None of the two new releases took bumper initials. The trade had expected DUNKI to net more than Rs. 30 crore on the first day but the day closed at Rs. 29.20 crore. Of course, DUNKI could never have repeated the initials of the last two films of Shah Rukh Khan because while both those films (PATHAAN and JAWAN) were high-octane action films, DUNKI was a social film. Collections of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer on Friday totalled Rs. 20 crore (approximately), taking the 2-day total to more than Rs. 49 crore. SALAAR (dubbed) netted Rs. 18 crore on the first day. The figure of 18 includes the collections of the Hindi dubbed version in South circuits.

Collections picked up on Saturday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 1.25 crore. The total for Sunday — Rs. 1.15 crore — was less than that of Saturday, which gave an indication that the film’s future was bleak. After a first weekend total of Rs. 3.25 crore, collections for the weekdays were rather dull: Monday – Rs. 0.40 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.27 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.27 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.26 crore. Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan did alright in 1st week in Gujarat only, because of Gujarati characters in the film. In the rest of India, it met with a dull fate.

Tiger 3 dropped more than 60% in 2nd week, after just a 5-day first week. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 13.25 crore (Hindi version Rs. 13 crore, dubbed versions Rs. 0.25 crore) on Friday. Collections increased to Rs. 18.75 crore (Hindi Rs. 18.25 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.50 crore) on Saturday. The ODI Cricket World Cup finals on Sunday saw collections dip to Rs. 10.50 crore (Hindi Rs. 10.25 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.25 crore). Therefore, the total for the second weekend was Rs. 42.50 crore (Hindi Rs. 41.50 crore, dubbed Rs. 1 crore). Collections for the weekdays were on the lower side: Monday – Rs. 7.35 crore (Hindi Rs. 7.25 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.10 crore), Tuesday – Rs. 6.70 crore (Hindi Rs. 6.60 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.10 crore), Wednesday – Rs. 6.10 crore (Hindi Rs. 6.05 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.05 crore), Thursday – Rs. 5.30 crore (Hindi Rs. 5.25 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.05 crore). ‘TIGER 3’ DISAPPOINTS FANS BUT MANAGES GOOD COLLECTIONS, FACES LEAN DAYS AHEAD

Tiger 3, which opened on Sunday, November 12 owing to Diwali, collected very well on the first five days but, as predicted by us, has not found universal acceptance because of its pro-Pakistan subject. The Diwali (festival holidays) period gave a major boost to the collections as did the Tiger franchise, Salman Khan and the YRF brand. It netted Rs. 44.50 crore on the first day (Hindi version Rs. 43 crore, Tamil dubbed and Telugu dubbed versions Rs. 1.50 crore), which is a record for Laxmi Pooja day collections. On the second day, the total soared to Rs. 59.25 crore (Rs. 58 crore for the Hindi version, Rs. 1.25 crore for the dubbed versions). The third day (New Year’s day) saw the film netting Rs. 44.75 crore (Hindi version Rs. 43.50 crore, dubbed versions Rs. 1.25 crore). Collections on the fourth day (Bhai Dooj day) totalled Rs. 21.25 crore (Hindi version Rs. 20.50 crore, dubbed versions Rs. 0.75 crore). Although a drop on the fourth day was expected, the quantum of fall was more than expected. Of course, the India-New Zealand World Cup cricket match on that day also adversely affected collections but the drop would’ve been lesser if the film had found more appreciation and universal acceptance. Thursday (5th day) closed at Rs. 18.50 crore (Hindi Rs. 18 crore, dubbed Rs. 0.50 crore). In this way, the total for the first 5-day week was Rs. 188.25 crore (Hindi Rs. 183 crore, dubbed versions Rs. 5.25 crore). Before its release, the figure that was expected to close the first 5-day week was Rs. 230-250 crore. The film will not be able to even touch, leave alone surpass, the Rs. 340-crore total of Tiger Zinda Hai which was released six years earlier (December 2017). The second week (after the first 5-day week) started with a net collection total of Rs. 13.25 crore (Hindi Rs. 13 crore, dubbed versions Rs. 0.25 crore) on Friday. Overseas, the film grossed US $7.5 million (Rs. 62 crore) in the first 5-day week. Shockingly, the pro-Pakistan story has not worked wonders Overseas. It should have, but since it hasn’t, it’s a sign that even otherwise, the film has not lived up to people’s expectations!

Jigar Thanda Double X (dubbed) bombed in the first week.

The Marvels (dubbed and the original English versions) did not do anything impressive in the first week. The Hindi dubbed version, in particular, fared poorly.

12th Fail did fair in 3rd week due to the massive opposition of Tiger 3 from Sunday, November 12. The third weekend commenced with a take of Rs. 1.11 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday increased to Rs. 1.88 crore, but the total on Sunday (despite Diwali and weekly holiday) was only Rs. 0.45 crore due to the release of Tiger 3. After a weekend total of Rs. 3.44 crore, collections for the weekdays were quite good due to the Diwali holidays: Monday – Rs. 1.68 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.65 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.92 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.85 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 5.10 crore, far more than the total for the weekend. In this way, the third week closed at Rs. 8.54 crore. Grand total for 3 weeks: Rs. 34.75 crore.

Leo (dubbed) is on its last lap. It buckled under the opposition of Tiger 3 in the fourth week. It netted Rs. 0.45 crore in the fourth weekend, and another Rs. 0.22 crore during the weekdays, taking the total for 4th week to Rs. 0.67 crore. Grand total for 4 weeks: Rs. 29.86 crore.

Naal Bhag 2 (Marathi) did fairly well in 1st week in only some pockets of Maharashtra.
