‘HEY KAMEENI’ REVIEW | 22 December, 2023

Bhairav Films’ Hey Kameeni (A) is the story of a girl who has to prove herself to her family.

Kamini (Drishika Chander) is on the lookout for a job. She befriends Gauri (Aasheema Vardaan) who helps her land a job. But Kamini soon runs away with Gauri’s Aadhaar and PAN cards. When Gauri confronts her, she entrusts her (and her house help, Tashi) a task for which she offers them money. Does Gauri oblige? Who is Kamini?

Anjali Joshi has written a juvenile story which fails to involve the viewers. The screenplay, penned by Mani Shankar and Anjali Joshi, is rather dull. The audience wonders why Gauri, howsoever in need of money she may have been in, would even attempt to carry out a task for Kamini who has stolen her Aadhaar and PAN cards, no less! The identity of Kamini hardly comes as a shock/surprise for the viewers. Her exposé on her brothers looks kiddish. Dialogues are ordinary.

Drishika Chander does well as Kamini. Aasheema Vardaan performs ably as Gauri. Somanth Hotta is so-so as Kamini’s house help, Tashi. Guru Saran Tiwari, Rahul Chauhan and Uday Rajveer Singh lend routine support as Kamini’s brothers viz. Ashok, Vishal and Sachin respectively. Avijit Dutt is alright as Kamini’s father. Supriya Karnik lends routine support in a brief role as Kamini’s mother. Adesh Pandit (as police inspector Ankush), Bhuvan Kaila (as Prateek) and Mudassir Khan (as the hiker) provide average support. Others pass muster.

Mani Shankar’s direction is dull. His editing is also found lacking. Music (Jonathan Edward, Ken Goma, Rinky Sharma, Yogesh Verma and Prem Shankar) is so-so. Lyrics (Jonathan Edward, Ken Goma, Rajesh Manthan, Rinky Sharma, Yogesh Verma and Vanisree) are functional. Song picturisations (Shubham Singh, Nixon D’cruz and Teens) hardly deserve mention. Camerawork is average. Shaolin Mallesh’s action direction is nothing to shout about. Bhaskar Mudavath’s art direction is okay.

On the whole, Hey Kameeni is a poor show all the way.

Released on 22-12-’23 on JioCinema.
