‘INDOO KI JAWANI’ RELEASED IN CINEMAS LATE: T-SERIES SETTLES CDC ISSUE | 12 December, 2020

Producer Bhushan Kumar and all-India distributor Anil Thadani settled the issue of payment of Content Delivery Charge (CDC) yesterday (December 11) afternoon with the digital projection companies and thereby paved the way for the release of Indoo Ki Jawani in the cinemas which they had left out of their release plans. Around 400 cinemas across India, mostly single-screen cinemas and multiplexes other than those of the national chains, were not sent the KDM (Key Delivery Message) for screening the film on Friday morning. In this way, the exhibitors got to know that they would not be able to screen the film at their cinemas because of Bhushan Kumar and Anil Thadani having backed out of their commitment to bear the CDC. Pertinent to note that all these exhibitors had announced the film at their cinemas and had put up the minuscule publicity materials they had received from Thadani. While some of these cinemas opened the film from the evening/night show yesterday, others opened it today (12th).

Bhushan Kumar and Thadani, after agreeing to bear the CDC, did a volte face and wanted the cinemas to bear the CDC which is less than Rs. 2,000 per cinema. It is learnt that the digital projection companies like UFO Moviez wanted to recover the CDC from the distributor (Anil Thadani) only, as was the convention before the lockdown. The stalemate led to cancellation of the film’s release in approximately 400 cinemas while the national multiplex chains opened the film as scheduled.

Grapevine has it that according to the settlement, the CDC will be borne by the cinemas concerned but it will be recovered by the digital projection company (UFO) from distributor Anil Thadani. UFO has reportedly given Thadani a credit period of 30-45 days to pay it the total CDC amount as he would have to recover the CDC from each of the cinemas before passing the same onward to UFO.

CDC amount…

Incidentally, the film is recording extremely poor collections all over. The first day’s net collection total in C.I. circuit, for instance, was a paltry Rs. 37,000!
