OBJECTION AGAINST USE OF ‘KAMATHIPURA’, ‘KATHIAWADI’ IN ‘GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI’ | 23 February, 2022

The Bombay high court will hear two petitions against the use of terms ‘Kamathipura’ and ‘Kathiawadi’ in Gangubai Kathiawadi. While one petition was filed by Kamathipura (Bombay) MLA Amin Patel seeking an urgent hearing before a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M.S. Karnik, the other was filed by local resident Shraddha Surve and was mentioned for urgent hearing before a bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Madhav Jamdar on March 1.

Patel is seeking a disclaimer in the film, clarifying that the entire Kamathipura is not a red-light zone, and he claims that the film title is hurting the sentiments of its residents. His plea is to remove references to words ‘Kathiawadi’ and ‘Kamathipura’ from the film.

Surve’s petition says that she was aggrieved that the name of her locality was “being lowered”. She said that both, the Central Board of Film Certification and film producer Bhansali Productions, “neglected” renaming “Kamathipura”, an area in the city, where some parts of the movie were shot. She alleged that the use of ‘Kamathipura’ had shown “disrespect towards the area and its residents”.

The film is scheduled for release on February 25.
