Noted Marathi and Hindi film and theatre actress Uttara Baokar passed away in a hospital in Pune on 11th April. She was 79 and was suffering from cancer. She is survived by a brother and a sister. Her last rites were performed on 12th.
Uttara worked in Hindi films like Mrinal Sen’s Ek Din Achanak and Govind Nihalani’s Tamas. For Sen’s film, she won the National Award for best supporting actress for playing the wife of a professor who does not return home. She was also a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee in 1984. She studied at the National School of Drama, where she later went on teach as a professor.
Among the many Marathi films she worked in were Sanwad, Doghi and Vastupurush. She also did some landmark Marathi plays, one of which was Umrao Jaan. She had translated Jayant Dalvi’s Marathi play, Sandhyachhaya, in Hindi (Kusum Kumar), which she herself directed.
