PETITION AGAINST ‘BHARAT’ RELEASE DISMISSED | 8 June, 2019

The Delhi high court on 4th June dismissed a petition seeking a stay on the release of Bharat on 5th June. The petition, filed by one Vikas Tyagi, sought a change in the film’s title as well as in the dialogues of the film, in which the main character, Bharat, has been compared to India.

The matter was heard by a vacation bench of Justices J.R. Midha and Chander Shekhar. It was the petitioner’s case that the film distorts the political image of our country and naming the film Bharat was a “shameless, cunning stratagem to encash the deep-rooted feeling for our country”. The petition stated that whatever character Salman Khan plays in any film, the portrayal deeply emphasises on flippancy and vulgar behaviour. “No one wants his nation to be associated with such roguish and frivolous character,” the petition submitted. It was argued by the petitioner that such a flippant character portraying our country would hurt the sentiments of people.

The court watched the film’s trailer and dismissed the petition by concluding that the case had no merit.

Salman Khan Films was represented by senior advocate Balbir Singh with advocate Nizam Pasha. They were instructed by DSK Legal.
