New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions and Fireside Films’ Mortal Kombat II (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; A) is a martial arts fantasy film based on the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It is a sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021) and is the fourth in the Mortal Kombat film series.
The fan favourite champions, now joined by Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) himself, are pitted against one another in the final battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), which threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
Jeremy Slater has written a story based on the video game. But there are so many characters that it gets confusing at several places. Jeremy Slater’s screenplay is engaging in parts, but it also becomes boring at several points. Hence the drama fails to keep the viewers engaged throughout.
Johnny Cage acts ably as Karl Urban. Adeline Rudolph does well as Kitana. Martyn Ford is good as Shao Kahn. Jessica McNamee is effective in the role of Sonya Blade. Josh Lawson performs well as Kano. Ludi Lin is good in the role of Liu Kang. Tati Gabrielle is fair as Jade. Damon Herriman is impactful as Quan Chi. Tadanobu Asano makes his mark as Lord Raiden. C.J. Bloomfield does a fair job as Baraka. Mehcad Brooks (as Jax), Lewis Tan (as Cole Young), Chin Han (as Shang Tsung), Hiroyuki Sanada (as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion), Desmond Chiam (as King Jerrod), Ana Thu Nguyen (as Queen Sinde), Max Huang (as King Lao), Joe Taslim (as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot) and Sophia Xu (as young Kitana) lend decent support.
Simon McQuoid’s direction is okay. The narration is not of the kind which can mesmerise the audience. Benjamin Wallfisch’s background music is quite impactful. Stephen F. Windon’s cinematography is eye-filling. Yôhei Tanedas’ production designing is of a fine standard. Stuart Levy’s editing leaves something to be desired. Dubbing is proper.
On the whole, Mortal Komat II is too ordinary to shine at the Hindi box-office.
Released on 8-5-’26 at Maratha Mandir (daily 1 show) and other cinemas of Bombay thru Warner Bros. Pictures (India) Pvt. Ltd. Publicity: ordinary. Opening: poor. …….Also released all over. Opening was dull everywhere.
