Sony Pictures International Productions and Movie Tunnel Productions’ Tera Kya Hoga Lovely (UA) is the story of a dark-skinned girl whose parents find it difficult to get a suitable boy for her.
Lovely (Ileana D’Cruz) is dark-skinned but well-educated. Sombir is a police sub-inspector. Sombir’s (Randeep Hoda) mother rejects Lovely because her family had edited the photograph sent to them (Sombir’s family) and made her appear fair-skinned. Anyway, after a lot of efforts, a boy’s father agrees to get his son married to Lovely for double dowry. Since Lovely is against the dowry system, she asks her friend, Guggu (Karan Kundra), to have the dowry items stolen. A police complaint is filed and the case is now being investigated by Sombir. During investigations, Sombir develops feelings for Lovely. Do Sombir and Lovely get married?
Anil Rodhan and Kunal Mandekar have written a routine story which is too simplistic too. The screenplay, penned by Anil Rodhan, Rupinder Chahal and Balwinder Singh Janjua, has a dash of comedy. Other than that, the drama has very little to sustain the viewers’ interest. Besides, the drama does get a bit confusing at places, mainly because there are too many characters. Dialogues (by Anil Rodhan, Rupinder Chahal and Balwinder Singh Janjua) are average.
Randeep Hoda performs ably as Sombir. Ileana D’Cruz is good as Lovely. Pavan Malhotra lends fair support as Lovely’s father, Hawa Singh. Rajendra Gupta is alright as Lovely’s paternal uncle, Bhanwar Singh. Karan Kundra makes his mark as Lovely’s friend, Guggu. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan’s (as hawaldaar Chandrawel) comedy is quite alright. Geeta Agarwal Sharma makes a fine impression in the role of Sombir’s mother, Renu Kumari. Shruti Panwar is adequate as Lovely’s mother, Shakuntala. Divas Huria is okay as Lovely’s brother, Tinda. Ajay Khatri is so-so as Vikram Dahiya. Sushil Dahiya has his moments as Vikram’s father. Meghna Malik is quite nice as Lovely’s paternal aunt (bua), Suman. Vishal Dahiya is average as Lovely’s cousin, Billu. Sukhwinder Chahal (as Lovely’s uncle, Dharampal), Ashima Singh (as Lovely’s paternal grandmother), Shivankit Singh Parihar (as truck driver Lillu), Ishu Kumar (as thief Sunny), Naveen Sandhu (as thief Bunty) and Pall Singh (as driver Sandeep) provide adequate support.
Balwinder Singh Janjua’s direction is fairly nice but the script is routine. Amit Trivedi’s music is melodious. Irshad Kamil’s lyrics are nice. Adil Shaikh’s song picturisations are okay. Ketan Sodha’s background music is alright. Andre Menezes’ camerawork is average. Manohar Verma’s action and stunts are functional. Prerna Kathuria and Ranjit Singh’s production designing is fair. Sanyukta Kaza’s editing is quite sharp.
On the whole, Tera Kya Hoga Lovely may be a decently made film but its box-office prospects are dim because of various reasons, primary among them being the routine script and lack of awareness about the film’s release and even about the film itself.
