In what may be a unique case, the music rights of Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starrer Coolie No. 1 are held by two music companies — Tips and Zee Music — simultaneously. While the rights of two songs — Main toh raste se jaa raha tha and Goriya chura na mera jiya — vest with Tips, the rights of the other songs from the film are held by Zee Music.

Producer Vashu Bhagnani and director David Dhawan wanted to use two songs from their old Coolie No. 1 (1995), starring Govinda, in the new film starring Varun and Sara. Since the audio rights of the earlier Coolie No. 1 were held by Tips, Bhagnani approached it for the rights to reprise the two aforementioned numbers. However, for fear that once the two remixed songs would be out, the two original super-hit songs would run out of steam, Tips refused to part with the right to remix those songs. In other words, Vashu could not remix his own songs. A way out was found when Tips agreed to allow Bhagnani to remix the two chartbusters provided the rights of those songs were also given to Tips. That’s how Tips retained the music rights of the two remixed songs of the new Coolie No. 1 while Zee Music acquired the rights of the other songs from the same film.

Although the case of Sajid Nadiadwala’s Judwaa (1997) and Judwaa 2 (2017) is not the same, it does remind of the Coolie No. 1 case. When Nadiadwala was remaking his own Salman starrer, Judwaa, as Judwaa 2, starring Varun Dhawan, he too wanted to remix two songs from his Judwaa. The songs were Chalti hai kya 9 se 12 and Oonchi hai building. He, therefore, approached Venus, the music company which held the rights of the Salman Khan starrer, Judwaa. As was expected, Venus asked Sajid to pay a price for the rights of the chartbusting songs. Believe it or not, Nadiadwala had to pay Venus more for the remix rights of the two songs than he had received from Venus 20 years earlier for the music rights of the entire album of Judwaa! Of course, Venus did not insist on holding the audio rights of Judwaa 2. The music rights of the remake/sequel were with T-Series.

It is just a coincidence that both, Judwaa 2 and the new Coolie No. 1, star Varun Dhawan. Another coincidence is that the original two films as well as the two remakes are directed by David Dhawan.
