Marathi film and television actor Sagar Karande lost more than Rs. 61 lakh to cyber fraudsters who promised him money for liking Instagram videos. This modus operandi is called ‘task’ fraud in the world of cyber crime.
The actor lodged a complaint with the North region cyber police station in Bombay earlier this week. As per the FIR, Karande received a WhatsApp message on his mobile phone on February 23 from one Meena Sakpal from Epsilon Co. Ltd. She offered him Rs. 150 per like on Instagram videos. After he completed several such tasks, the fraudsters asked him to invest money for higher returns. He was asked to deposit Rs. 19 lakh when he tried to withdraw his ‘earnings’. The actor eventually ended up paying Rs. 61.83 lakh into various bank accounts and UPI ids.
