IRRFAN KHAN, SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE, BHANU ATHAIYA HONOURED POSTHUMOUSLY AT OSCARS 2021 | 26 April, 2021

Chloé Zhao won the best director Oscar award for Nomadland, becoming the first woman of colour and only the second woman to win the award. The film also won the best picture award and fetched the best actress award for Frances McDormand. The best actor award went to Anthony Hopkins for his performance in The Father. Chadwick Boseman was the hot favourite for the best actor award but Hopkins beat late Boseman to it, making him (Anthony Hopkins) the oldest Oscar winner at 83. However, Chadwick Boseman, Indian actors Irrfan Khan and Soumitra Chatterjee (whose portrayal of the character in Satyajit Ray’s Apu ranks among the best in Indian cinema) and Indian costume designer Bhanu Athaiya were honoured postumously in the In Memoriam segment.

It was an unusual Oscar ceremony this morning (26th April) in view of the coronavirus pandemic. There was no formal ceremony. In other words, there was no host and there were no guests for the 93rd Oscar Awards ‘ceremony’. Indian filmThe White Tiger, which was nominated in the best adapted screenplay category, lost to The Father.
