‘SHARMAJEE KI BETI’ REVIEW | 28 June, 2024

Applause Entertainment and Ellipsis Entertainment’s Sharmajee Ki Beti (UA) is a mix of different stories of Sharma girls.

Swati Sharma (Vanshika Taparia) is the daughter of Jyoti Sharma (Sakshi Tanwar) and Sudhir Sharma (Sharib Hashmi). Jyoti is a respected teacher in a coaching class but Swati is always irritated with her mother because the pressures of work make it impossible for her to devote time to Swati. Besides, Swati is frustrated because she doesn’t achieve puberty like the other girls in her class. Meanwhile, Swati’s mother one day wins the award for the best teacher. Does this change Swati’s attitude towards her mother?

Gurleen Sharma (Arista Mehta) studies in Std. VIII with Swati. The two are best friends. Gurleen’s parents are Kiran Sharma (Divya Dutta) and Vinod Sharma (Parvin Dabas). Kiran is a simpleton who has come from Patiala to Bombay. Being from a small town, she feels lonely in Bombay and constantly needs to talk to people. But people in Bombay don’t have time as each one is busy in his/her own world. To make matters worse for Kiran, she realises on her wedding anniversary that her husband is in an extra-marital relationship. As for Gurleen, she realises that she is more attracted towards girls. Gurleen confides in her mother about her gay tendencies. How does her mother (Kiran) react? And what is Kiran’s reaction on knowing that her husband is clandestinely having a love affair?

Tanvi Sharma (Saiyami Kher) is a budding professional cricketer. She is in a relationship with Rohan (Ravjeet Singh) who is a struggling actor. Rohan is constantly belittling Tanvi as he wants her to quit cricket. A day comes when she has to choose between playing professional cricket and Rohan. What choice does Tanvi Sharma make?

Tahira Kashyap Khurrana has written a lovely story about different Sharma girls and women. The story or, rather, various stories are very sensitive and suck the audience into them. Tahira Kashyap Khurrana has woven the different stories beautifully into a cohesive screenplay which keeps the interest of the viewers alive. Although the drama moves on different tracks, it neither gets confusing nor irritating. All along, it talks about women empowerment and the feelings of women, without becoming preachy. The sensitivity of the story and screenplay writer comes to the fore in every scene of the drama. Tahira Kashyap Khurrana’s dialogues are heartfelt.

Vanshika Taparia does an excellent job as Swati Sharma. She conveys her emotions beautifully. Arista Mehta is good as Gurleen Sharma. She looks pretty. Saiyami Kher lives the role of Tanvi Sharma. Divya Dutta is extraordinary in the role of Kiran Sharma. Her performance tugs at the heart strings. Sakshi Tanwar delivers a dignified performance as Jyoti Sharma. Her acting stands out. Sharib Hashmi makes his mark as Sudhir Sharma. Parvin Dabas is lovely as Vinod Sharma. In spite of having few dialogues, he leaves a fine impression. Ravjeet Singh has his moments as Rohan. Sunita Malhotra acts naturally as Kiran Sharma’s mother. Sushant Ghadge makes his presence felt as Kiran Sharma’s house help, Chhotu. Tasneem Ali (as Mrs. Sinha) and Vinayak Ketkar (as casting agent Yash) provide nice support. Others are appropriate.

Tahira Kashyap Khurrana’s direction is sensitive. She has made a film which touches the heart. Yes, it may not have the usual masala but it does create an impact while entertaining too. Music (Abhishek-Ananya, Ravator and The Local Train) and lyrics (Shellee, Nivedita Lakra and The Local Train) are okay; they should’ve been better. Anant Bhat’s background music is quite effective. Rakesh Haridas’ camerawork is alright. Tanvi Patil’s production designing is fair. Antara Lahiri does a fine job of the editing.

On the whole, Sharmajee Ki Beti is an entertainer with a message. It will be appreciated, more by the womenfolk.
