Veteran actor Vijoo Khote breathed his last on 30th September in Bombay. He was 77 years old. He suffered from multiple organ failure. He was the brother of actress Shubha Khote. He had acted in more than 440 films, mostly in Hindi and Marathi.
His role of Kaalia in Sholay and the dialogue, “Sardar, maine aap ka namak khaya hai”, are remembered even today. In fact, he barely had four dialogues in the epic film, which he had to keep repeating but that role became a landmark one in his career. Also popular was his character of Robert in Andaz Apna Apna and his trademark dialogue in the film, “Galti se mistake ho gaya.” Vijoo had worked in television too, and his best-known TV serial was Zabaan Sambhalke.
For someone who started working in films in the mid-1960s, it was creditable that he was working till the end. He was a very popular actor and was particularly known for his comic roles. He had also acted on Marathi stage.
A prayer meeting in his memory will be held on 5th October from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the mini theatre of Ravindra Natya Mandir Complex at Prabhadevi in Bombay.
